Marine Mechanical Engineer Level 1

Business unit:

Gibbs & Cox, as part of the Maritime Surface Division at Leidos has an opening for a junior level Marine Mechanical Engineer at the Newport News, VA Location.

Position summary: Leidos Gibbs & Cox is seeking a Marine Mechanical Engineer Level 1 to support the design, analysis, and integration of marine mechanical systems for naval and maritime platforms. This entry-level role is suited for an engineer with foundational technical knowledge, strong analytical skills, and interest in supporting ship design, system development, and lifecycle engineering efforts.

Primary responsibilities:
  • Works independently with direct supervision, or on project teams
  • Performs calculations applying mechanical engineering principles, procedures, and criteria
  • Develops analyses and prepares technical reports and other engineering documentation
  • Develops ship propulsion and auxiliary system calculations and designs, and prepares technical purchase specifications for major equipment
  • Develops test procedures to verify equipment and system performance
  • Supports engineering activities for systems that may include main and auxiliary propulsion, fuel systems, lubrication systems, seawater and fresh water systems, and heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems


Basic qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education in Marine Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
  • Foundational understanding of mechanical systems, thermodynamics, fluid systems, or shipboard systems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Experience with CAD and Microsoft Office applications


Preferred qualifications:
  • Internship, co-op, academic project, or early career experience in marine, naval, or defense engineering
  • Familiarity with ship design, piping, HVAC, propulsion support systems, or auxiliary mechanical systems
  • Professional Engineering or Engineer in Training certification in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another applicable discipline.
  • Proficiency in using industry-standard computer aided design, engineering analysis software tools, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Exposure to U.S. Navy, shipbuilding, or maritime industry standards


Work environment: This role supports Leidos Gibbs & Cox engineering work in a collaborative environment focused on maritime and defense solutions.

Some travel to support specific customers and contracts should be expected, approximately 10%. Full time onsite. Open to flexible working arrangements after experience. Must be able to obtain a security clearance.

Pay Range $57,850.00 - $104,575.00
