Position OverviewAs a Manager, Tax Projects at CarMax, you will lead cross-functional initiatives that impact property tax, sales tax compliance, and audits. This role serves as a Tax Subject Matter Expert (SME), analyzing current and future business processes to identify tax risks, influence strategic decisions, and implement best-in-class solutions. You will design new processes, manage change, and collaborate with internal and external partners to ensure compliance and operational excellence.
Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the CarMax Home Office in Richmond, VA and Associates will work onsite 4 days per week.
Work Authorization: Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Sponsorship will not be considered for this specific role.
Team OverviewThe Indirect Tax team operates in a collaborative environment focused on accuracy, compliance, and continuous improvement. As a leader, you will guide strategic initiatives, manage project execution, and advocate for tax improvements across the organization.
Role Responsibilities- Serve as Tax SME on strategic initiatives, ensuring tax laws and compliance requirements are addressed.
- Develop and execute project plans, including risk mitigation, communication strategies, and documentation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to remove obstacles and support day-to-day project operations.
- Lead testing efforts, defining test plans, analyzing results, and coordinating remediation of defects.
- Maintain strong relationships with business partners, aligning tax project plans with company objectives.
- Advocate for tax initiatives, gaining buy-in from leadership and stakeholders through clear communication.
- Manage audits effectively, defending CarMax's tax positions and ensuring full compliance.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 7+ years of sales tax experience in public accounting or corporate tax departments.
- Proven expertise in process improvement, project management, and change management.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including associate development and team management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Access.
Preferred QualificationsThe annual salary for this position is:$104,200.00 - $166,700.00

Associates that are considered full-time hourly or commission/incentive eligible:
- To earn up to 48 hours of sick time per year accrued on a per pay period basis and between 80 hours and 200 hours per year of vacation time after a 90 day waiting period depending on years of continuous service with the Company.
- For 8 hours of pay for each of a total of 6 paid scheduled holidays per year plus 1 floating holiday. If such an Associate does work on a scheduled holiday due to business need, they are eligible for Holiday Premium Pay.
Associates considered full-time salaried are entitled to paid time away with no specified limit as needed for sick, vacation, bereavement, jury duty, holidays, floating holiday, etc. subject to manager approval.
