CNN Digital Commerce is seeking a Software Engineering Manager to lead a talented and innovative engineering team building the next generation of web applications and commerce products. This manager will work closely with a cross-functional team to develop, enhance, and scale platforms like CNN Underscored. You will be responsible for leading the development of high-quality, customer-facing products and tools that power CNN’s e-commerce initiatives. As an engineering leader, you will foster a culture of excellence, mentorship, and continuous improvement.

Your Role Accountabilities…

  • Lead and mentor a high-performing engineering team, fostering collaboration, innovation, growth, and technical excellence while promoting continuous learning and career development.
  • Drive technical strategy and oversee the development of scalable, high-performance web applications for CNN Digital Commerce.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration to align engineering, product, and business teams for data-driven decision-making and streamlined product development.
  • Lead efforts to improve engineering workflows, tooling, and processes for operational excellence.
  • Implement and advocate for agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum or Kanban) and support continuous delivery practices.
  • Drive initiatives around monitoring application health, infrastructure, and code performance to ensure system reliability and optimal user experiences.
  • Drive innovation by adopting modern technologies, optimizing architecture, and ensuring long-term maintainability through code reviews and refactoring.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (M.S. preferred).
  • 10+ years of software development experience, including 2+ years in a technical leadership role.
  • Proven track record in leading teams responsible for building and scaling e-commerce platforms or consumer-facing products.
  • Extensive experience in modern web technologies, with deep expertise in JavaScript (Node.js, Vue.js), TypeScript, Fastly and Python.
  • Proficiency in cloud services such as AWS (Serverless/SAM, etc.), containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and infrastructure management (Terraform, CloudFormation).
  • Strong experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL), search engines (Elasticsearch), and caching solutions (Redis).
  • Experience with high-performance, high-availability applications in production environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and inspire engineers to meet ambitious technical goals.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and business teams.
  • Deep familiarity with Agile development methodologies (Scrum/Kanban).
  • Experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines and supporting incremental delivery of business value.

Bonus Skills

  • Experience in non-procedural programming or applying functional-style programming concepts.
  • Previous involvement in building e-commerce, affiliate platforms, or consumer media applications.
  • Experience in mentoring junior engineers, conducting technical interviews, and contributing to talent acquisition efforts.
