Description
Assistant Project Manager - Preconstruction
What You'll Do
As an Assistant Project Manager - Preconstruction, you'll help turn awarded work into projects that are ready for successful execution. Working with Preconstruction, Estimating, Procurement, Engineering, Project Management, and Construction Operations, you'll help build the plans, budgets, procurement tools, and project documentation that allow our field teams to start strong.
This role is more than project administration. You'll help "plan the work" so Construction Operations can "work the plan," ensuring each project moves from estimating into execution with clear scope, organized documentation, sound procurement planning, and early visibility to risks, constraints, and opportunities.
You'll have the opportunity to:
• Coordinate assigned preconstruction activities from project award through Construction Operations handoff, helping ensure project teams have the information, planning, and documentation needed to begin work effectively.
• Partner with Preconstruction Managers, Estimating, Procurement, Engineering, Project Management, and Construction Operations to advance project planning and maintain alignment before construction begins.
• Develop Scope Plans in collaboration with Preconstruction leadership, translating contract documents, estimates, drawings, specifications, and execution assumptions into clear planning tools for the project team.
• Prepare Activity Plans that break defined scopes of work into practical construction planning details, including sequencing, resources, safety considerations, schedule inputs, and coordination requirements.
• Coordinate early engagement with subcontractors and suppliers to confirm scope alignment, lead times, pricing assumptions, and readiness requirements before project handoff.
• Work with Procurement to prepare, review, issue, and track purchase orders and subcontracts, helping ensure commercial documents reflect project scope, schedule, and company expectations.
• Evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotes for completeness, exclusions, qualifications, and alignment with project requirements, elevating concerns before commitments are finalized.
• Coordinate with Estimating to organize the final project budget, support estimate conversion, assist with cost coding, and prepare financial information for project setup.
• Review contract proposals, drawings, specifications, and plans to identify key scope requirements, project risks, schedule constraints, and items requiring special attention during handoff.
• Build comprehensive project handoff packages that organize estimating assumptions, procurement status, scope details, planning documents, open action items, and project-specific insights for Construction Operations.
• Support value engineering and constructability discussions by helping evaluate materials, methods, sequencing, logistics, and planning alternatives that may improve safety, cost, schedule, or execution quality.
• Collaborate with Engineering and Construction Operations on preconstruction work products such as temporary works planning, constructability reviews, lift planning, shoring, forming systems, and other project-specific planning needs.
• Promote consistency across preconstruction documents, planning tools, project logs, procedures, and handoff materials so teams can operate from a common and reliable planning standard.
• Integrate safety into preconstruction planning by identifying work methods, sequencing considerations, site constraints, and operational risks that should be addressed before field execution.
• Participate in project forecasts, cost-to-complete reviews, closeout discussions, and lessons-learned sessions to understand project performance and improve future preconstruction planning.
• Continue developing your knowledge of construction operations, estimating, procurement, contracts, project controls, planning, and team coordination while preparing for increased project management responsibility.
What We're Looking For
• Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering, Business, or a related field, or equivalent construction industry experience.
• Experience supporting construction projects through project coordination, project engineering, estimating, procurement, preconstruction, or field operations preferred.
• Working knowledge of construction documents, scopes of work, budgets, schedules, procurement, contracts, and project documentation.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to learn company systems, including document control, accounting, ERP, and project management platforms.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, documents, and project stakeholders.
• Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with internal teams, vendors, subcontractors, and project partners.
• Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and willingness to identify issues before they become execution problems.
• Self-motivated, accountable, and committed to continuous improvement.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel occasionally based on project needs.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means project teams receive accurate, organized, and useful preconstruction information before work begins. You help reduce confusion during project startup, improve handoff quality, identify planning gaps early, and support better alignment between estimating, procurement, engineering, and Construction Operations.
Over time, you become a trusted planning partner who can coordinate increasingly complex preconstruction activities, strengthen project readiness, and prepare for advancement into Project Manager-level responsibility.
