What you will do

The Pulp Operations Manager reports to the Mill Manager and is responsible for the safe and environmentally compliant operation of the pulp mill which consists of three continuous digesters, two brown stock washing lines and oxygen delignification, two bleaching lines and the Lurgi ClO2 production area. This role will focus on improving and optimizing current processes, establish strategic direction and execute operational excellence for operations. Directs the production operation and manages the most difficult problems involving the manufacturing process, ensuring the manufacture of products in planned quantities, at budgeted cost, and at desired quality.

Organizational Leadership

  • Responsible for safety performance, managing safety programs that include annual training, scheduled safety meetings, and safe job performance by employees.
  • Develops safety SOP's (Standard Operating Procedure) and Guidelines.
  • Drive short- and long-term strategy development and implementation across operations to achieve department goals and objectives ensuring alignment with broader mill and corporate strategic plans.
  • Manages the department to ensure that production budgets are met or exceeded.
  • Support and demonstrate the values of continuous improvement, learning and shared accomplishment.
  • Manages and develops employees' performance while growing employee competence through training.
  • Determines corrective action for production problems.
  • Ensures adequate raw material supplies are maintained for continued production.
  • Leads crews to improve processes by identifying and eliminating nonvalue added activities (waste).
  • Prepares and distributes information regarding changes to policies and procedures (as a result of kaizens or other CI opportunities) to employees.
  • Proactively drive cost optimization projects that deliver higher efficiency on an ongoing basis.
  • Champion organizational development and talent programs that anticipate and address shifts in talent pools.

What you will need

To be successful in this position, we are looking for candidates with the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Management, or related field preferred.
  • Previous leadership, project management, or system coordination experience required
  • 10+ years of continuous manufacturing process
  • Leadership with increasing experience in pulp and paper production; with a minimum of 5 years of budgetary responsibilities demonstrating strong business acumen.
  • Quick learner, who is optimistic and curious with a strong motivation for continuous improvement through collaboration.
  • Strong technical skills in the understanding and operation of the pulp area.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills especially for the pulp area.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills required.
  • Strong project planning skills. Demonstrate ability to review plans and quickly identify gaps.
  • Appropriately challenges to deliver best possible outcomes.
  • Ability to thoroughly understand the economic and financial levers of the business, analyse for improvement opportunities and make decisions to improve performance.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Current knowledge and proficiency with MS Office suite
  • Able to work in a high-speed manufacturing environment, sustained exposure to high-frequency noises, multiple hours standing, walking on concrete surfaces, heat, and cold and mill environments.
  • Able to wear and abide by Personal Protective Equipment that is required in the mill environment.
  • Able to climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolding.
  • Could be exposed to hazardous chemicals used in the manufacturing process.
  • Rotating On-Call Weekend Duty
