Job Summary:
The Chief Information Officer (CIO) is a distinguished executive in the organization and part of the central leadership team for the company. They play a critical role in shaping the company's technology strategy and driving its execution. They partner closely with other executives and stakeholders to identify business needs and opportunities for innovation, ensuring that technology is aligned with business objectives and integrated effectively into the company's overall strategy and operations.

They bring high impact to the company by implementing best practices for technology, operations, data management, privacy, and security, and the CIO also ensures that the company's technology infrastructure is secure, reliable, and compliant with applicable regulations. In addition, the CIO exercises keen focus on developing and retaining top talent, fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence, and promoting an environment of continuous learning and improvement. This highly visible position is a direct contributor to the company's growth and success in delivering highly scalable, mission-critical products and services, enabling it to compete effectively in an increasingly technology-driven marketplace.

Performance Outcomes

Management of IT Operations & Infrastructure

As a central leader in the department and company, the CIO has extraordinary knowledge that is system wide. They are responsible for leading highly talented and versatile platform and infrastructure development teams in multiple locations. They are considered an expert in their field and are a primary driver for architectural and design decisions for the company, expanding into product direction and requirements. Their work is regularly outside the scope of the tasks and tickets being created, working on broader innovations and improvements that impact products and productivity in significant ways. The CIO will have a broad time horizon that ranges several years into the future.

Individual tasks include:

  • Define and manage the technical infrastructure with an eye toward strategic business objectives and potential modernization and/or optimization
  • Play a key role in improving and optimizing the product development process in an agile development environment
  • Ensure tech systems and procedures lead to outcomes in line with business goals
  • Oversee the management of IT infrastructure, including data centers, network operations, security protocols, and IT support services, ensuring optimal performance and security
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements, industry standards, and best practices for data privacy and security


  • Communicate the IT strategy and performance metrics to stakeholders, including the executive team, board of directors, and employees
  • Continuously monitor and assess emerging technology trends and market dynamics to identify opportunities for growth and competitive advantage
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and security protocols; maintain a disciplined ITSM practice and evolve toward best practices as the business grows
  • Define and manage the IT budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to support strategic initiatives and ongoing operations
  • Monitor and improve the software development process to increase efficiency and quality
  • Collaboratively create and execute technical roadmaps, release plans, and project work plans; revise appropriately to meet changing needs, requirements, and/or capacity
  • Approve vendor negotiations and IT architecture
  • Engage in ongoing personal study of modern technologies and industry-related knowledge and skills


Engagement and Collaboration

The CIO will engage with others spanning the entire engineering department and expanding to the company at large. Their influence will be to all engineers, departments, and partners, including fellow executives. They will have heavy involvement with communication and coordination issues on behalf of their team (e.g., product reviews, product-development-committee, etc.), as well as interactions with other development teams.

Engagement responsibilities include:

  • Lead platform development teams to develop, support and scale existing applications that are facing extensive growth in complexity as well as usage volume, and engage heavily in planning and strategy for the department and company
  • Participate with other members of the senior leadership team (CEO, CTO, COO, and other executives) to define the company's market driven product roadmap; ensure alignment with the key business stakeholders and effectively manage resources and remove obstacles to accomplish business goals
  • Work with the entire engineering team in defining and implementing the next generation architecture that will support the company's applications and will be robust, efficient, and highly scalable
  • Collaborate with external partners and vendors to develop and maintain relationships and ensure the company is leveraging the best technology solutions available
  • Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing within the software engineering team
  • Drive the implementation of dynamic requirements/initiatives with teammates, cross-team collaborators, and with business partners as appropriate
  • Help prepare and present presentations and demonstrations for executive leadership, business partners, associates, or the department as appropriate


People Management

The CIO will lead and manage a large team or an entire information technology organization of around 50+ people, which includes managing other managers.

Management duties include:

  • Exercise excellence in leadership, helpfulness, and fostering of growth and development among your team; supervise, train, mentor, and hire direct-reports in a hands-on, lead-by-example style; follow-through with appropriate disciplinary directives as needed
  • Partner closely with HR and senior leadership for personnel matters
  • Manage team goals and performance metrics; provide necessary reporting
  • Participate in leadership meetings, discussions, and decision-making processes with leadership peers, both inside and outside of the engineering department as appropriate
  • Provide occasional cross-team assistance with supporting teammates and peers of neighboring teams


Education, Knowledge, and Experience

  • 15+ years of industry experience in software engineering and/or information systems
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent industry experience; higher degree- preferred
  • 7+ years of executive-level engineering management experience, with successful people management and a passion for people and team-building
  • Extensive experience and leadership in design and developing high performance, scalable and fault-tolerant enterprise and SaaS/Cloud applications
  • Proven ability to drive the entire software development process from concept, architecture design, development, and QA to deployment of complex web-based and mobile applications
  • Extensive product development experience with rich client-side applications as well as web-based applications that includes mobile application development
  • Proven experience effectively managing complex budgets

Physical Requirements/ Work Environment

Employee must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time, with the physical ability to work at the computer or other sedentary tasks for long periods of time. Employee can conduct duties discreetly and impartially. If working remotely, employee is able to work in a space that allows them to effectively complete their job tasks, including having reliable internet connectivity and the ability to participate effectively while on phone and video calls. Employee has regular and predictable attendance and punctuality. Occasional travel may be required, which could be via airplane and/or motor vehicle, depending on location.

Compensation for this position is $118,279 annually, based on experience and qualifications, with eligibility for a performance-based bonus opportunity.
