ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Ensure compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements while driving a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
• Lead, develop, and manage employees through effective recruitment, training, performance management, succession planning, and employee development.
• Establish departmental goals, priorities, and performance expectations to achieve operational, quality, and customer objectives.
• Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs), analyze performance data, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
• Manage departmental budgets and resources to achieve cost, productivity, and operational performance targets.
• Plan, coordinate, and oversee maintenance, reliability, outage, and operational improvement activities.
• Lead capital projects and equipment improvement initiatives in support of departmental and organizational objectives.
• Provide oversight of metallurgical processes, operating standards, refractory practices, and critical production consumables to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
• Manage inventory and supplier relationships for refractories and other critical consumables.
• Develop staffing plans and schedules to support operational requirements and departmental objectives.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve business objectives and support organizational success.
• Maintain required records, reports, budgets, performance metrics, and other administrative responsibilities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Competencies and Experience
Required:
• Minimum of seven years of relevant operational, technical, manufacturing, industrial, or related experience, including at least three years of progressive leadership experience.
• Demonstrated commitment to safety and safe work practices.
• Strong leadership, communication, coaching, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.
• Ability to lead teams, manage multiple priorities, and achieve results in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience planning, scheduling, and managing operational activities.
• Experience using operational, quality, productivity, and cost metrics to drive business results.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and business systems.
• Working knowledge of steelmaking processes, equipment, and operations.
• Regular and reliable attendance is required.
Preferred:
• Ten or more years of experience in steelmaking or heavy industrial manufacturing operations.
• Five or more years of management-level leadership experience.
• Experience with LMF, VTD, refractory systems, hot metal handling, or related metallurgical operations.
• Experience managing budgets, capital projects, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Experience leading cross-functional teams and implementing operational improvements.
Education
Required:
• Associate's degree in technical, engineering, manufacturing, business, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Preferred:
• Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Engineering, Manufacturing, Business, or a related field.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES / DIRECT REPORTS
This position is responsible for providing leadership and management oversight for employees within the assigned department.
Responsibilities include workforce planning, employee development, performance management, succession planning, employee engagement, policy administration, and ensuring departmental objectives are achieved through effective leadership and accountability.
The number of direct reports and composition of the assigned work group may vary based on the department and area of responsibility.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position operates in both the office and industrial environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment. This role is partially sedentary (average of 4 hours per day).
This position will often require work in the mill environment with exposure to heat/cold, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, noise and wearing safety equipment/clothing for protection from hazards.
The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:

• Hearing in person, on the phone, and/or in group settings
• Vision at near, mid, and far range
• Peripheral vision and depth perception
The employee will occasionally be required to:
• Balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or climb

• Handle, grip, hold, and grasp with both hands together or separately
• Finger and feel with both hands together or separately; sense temperature and textures
The employee will be required to sit, stand, and/or walk as follows:
• Sitting 0-8 hours at a time; average 5 hours a day
• Standing 0-8 hours at a time; average 2 hours a day
• Walking 0-8 hours at a time; average 1 hours a day
• Alternate sitting and standing as needed
The employee will be required to use the following machines or tools:
• Desktop computer, database and control systems
• Various hand tools
• Jack hammer / air rammer
• Torch / O2 lance
The employee will work in the following conditions:
• Indoors/Outdoors
• In extreme heat and extreme cold
• In humid conditions
• Amid fumes, dust, dirt, and smoke
• In confined areas and high places
• Around equipment in motion
• Amid noise
• Amid mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards
• While wearing safety equipment and/or clothing for protection from hazards
POSITION TYPE - WORK HOURS - TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
• This position is full-time and exempt.
• Onsite presence is required.
• The position generally works day shift, Monday through Friday; however, additional overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency response support may be required based on operational needs.
• Travel is expected up to 5% of the time and may include visits to other SSAB locations, vendors, training programs, conferences, or industry events.
