Full Job Description
Position is responsible for supervising laboratory operation and oversight of the laboratory staff of the Tennessee Oncology Flow and FISH departments. Provides service to patients by providing medical laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic information, products, and services. This position is also responsible for ensuring staff provides highest quality, cost effective, patient focused services and care and compliance with local, state, and federal requirements. Responsible for implementing and maintenance of clinical practice standards and staff development.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Oversees support and technical staff within the department and ensure they provide the highest quality of requirements.
  • Provides technical support and assistance to include bench processing/procedures and/or report generation as needed to maintain the operations of the department.
  • Assists Laboratory Director of Laboratory Operations in developing, implementing, and maintaining laboratory service standards.
  • Identifies and recommends opportunities to improve departmental systems.
  • Monitors workflow and turnaround time, including the scheduling of employees for services monitored.
  • Maintains medical laboratory productivity by monitoring workload of functional areas; identifying peak and slack periods; making operational or staffing adjustment.
  • Presents in-service programs to staff as needed.
  • Maintains medical laboratory staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
  • Maintains medical laboratory staff results by counseling and disciplining employees, planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
  • Maintains and/or monitors medical laboratory supplies inventory by verifying stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Maintains quality results by participating in quality assurance program; consulting pathologists; performing proficiency surveys; reviewing quality control and quality assurance for assigned area.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Comply with state and professional continuing education licensure requirements by providing in-service and/or educational programs, monitoring outcomes.
  • Resolves problems by consulting with pathologists, other laboratory managers, technical coordinators, laboratory directors, physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals.
  • Position requires on-site presence for a minimum of 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day. Working from home during business days/hours is not available for this position. Must be available for support and oversight during after-hours and weekends as needed to achieve the goals of the laboratory.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of clinical and pathology laboratory testing procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, communicable diseases, and environmental health issues.
  • Knowledge of laboratory regulations, including quality control of media, reagents, and equipment, laboratory safety, laboratory documentation requirements, sterilization requirements, and laboratory equipment.
  • Knowledge of applicable testing techniques.
  • Knowledge of planning, budgeting, quality control, customer service, and supervision.
  • Skill in performing laboratory tests.
  • Skill in project planning, laboratory operations, and budgetary control.
  • Skill in using computers for database management, testing, and record-keeping functions.
  • Ability to communicate appropriately, both orally and written.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with health care team.
  • Ability to recognize and resolve hazardous conditions. Able to deal calmly with emergency situations.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to demonstrate full range of motion, manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination in use of equipment and instruments.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in a CLIA high complexity laboratory with two years of supervisory experience or leadership responsibilities
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in Flow Cytometry and FISH testing
  • Must hold a valid Tennessee Medical Technologist license, supervisor or eligible required
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Understanding of CAP, CLIA, and other local, state, federal regulations
  • Certification required: Medical Laboratory Technologist, Supervisor General
