The Role at a Glance

As a Manager in Group Medical Underwriting, you will manage a team of medical underwriting professionals. You will oversee the adherence to policies and procedures, setting priorities, communicating key goals, tracking performance, and training team members to ensure success.

What you'll be doing

  • Supervise the day-to-day team operations for the medical underwriting team.
  • Manage the evaluation of individual employee medical underwriting requirements and risk selection on members of group accounts including new applicants, late plan entrants and benefit change requests during enrollment periods.
  • Evaluate risks and determine approval or rejection on complex cases and second signoffs.
  • Maintain knowledge on current and emerging medical underwriting practices and present on new trends/information to team.
  • Responsible for administering medical underwriting rules and guidelines, application quality audits, and insurance laws and regulations.
  • Provide training and development opportunities, including stretch assignments, for team members and give honest and open feedback to aid in the development of talent.
  • Manage and enhance organizational initiatives by positively influencing and supporting change management and/or departmental/enterprise initiatives.
  • Responsible for hiring, training and development of staff.
  • Ensure that top talent is hired and retained.
  • Build organizational capability.
  • Serve as a resource to team members and internal/external stakeholders.
  • Forge strong professional relationships with key partners (internal and external), with strong emphasis on collaboration with distribution and project management partners.
  • Ensure Quality Assurance and Training recommendations are incorporated into employee development and performance measurement
  • Carry out duties in compliance with all state and federal regulations and guidelines. Complies with all company and site policies and procedures.
  • Remain current in professional and industry trends.

What we're looking for

Must-haves:
  • Medical Underwriting expertise
  • 4 Year/Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience (4 years of experience in lieu of Bachelor's)
  • 5+ Years of risk management experience with substantial background in medical underwriting group coverages including 2+ years of managerial, supervisory, and/or demonstrated leadership experience


Nice-to-haves:
  • FALU (Fellow Academy of Life Underwriting)
  • FLMI (Fellow Life Management Institute)
  • Group/employer insurance experience

The pay range for this position is $72,900 - $131,600 with anticipated pay for new hires between the minimum and midpoint of the range and could vary above and below the listed range as permitted by applicable law. Pay is based on non-discriminatory factors including but not limited to work experience, education, location, licensure requirements, proficiency and qualifications required for the role. The base pay is just one component of Lincoln's total rewards package for employees. In addition, the role may be eligible for the Annual Incentive Program, which is discretionary and based on the performance of the company, business unit and individual. Other rewards may include long-term incentives, sales incentives and Lincoln's standard benefits package.
