Full Job Description
Key Responsibilities:

The Critical Facility Manager is responsible for the leadership, strategic thinking, cost avoidance and operational excellence of the airline's 24/7/365 Network Operations Center (NOC). This role ensures the reliability, safety, and efficiency of building systems and infrastructure that support 24/7/365 operations. The manager will lead a team of engineers, technicians, and vendors to maintain up time, manage risk, and drive continuous improvement across all facility operations. Serves as subject matter expert (SME) in assigned area or specialty (e.g., cooling, electrical, mechanical, environmental compliance of building operations and facilities-related interior and exterior infrastructure).

  • Provide operational oversight to ensure 100% uptime of critical systems including electrical, mechanical, HVAC, fire/life safety, and security systems. Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programs. Manage building automation systems and energy management platform.
  • Provide building engineering team supervision leadership to develop a high-performing team of facility engineers and technicians. Provide training and mentorship to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards, industry certifications and professional development opportunities.
  • Possessing a strong knowledge of risk management and compliance, implement and monitor risk mitigation strategies for critical infrastructure system and assets. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA, NFPA, and environmental reporting requirements.
  • Oversee vendor supervision and budget management by developing strong relationships with third-party service providers, govern service agreements and partner closely with United Procurement in achieving best value. Help create and manage annual operating and capital budgets within forecasted spend.
  • Execute strategic planning through leading long-term planning for infrastructure upgrades, capacity expansion, and sustainability initiatives. Collaborate with DT, security, and business leadership teams to align facility operations with organizational goals.
  • Ensure complete documentation and record keeping is executed which follows all federal, state, and local regulations for operations and work safety to include knowledge of safety procedures and equipment, procedures, and established techniques.
  • Serves as Environmental Coordinator for the campus in relation to diesel generator run times, fuel consumption, spill prevention, control and countermeasures (SPCC) and other duties as required by the United Airlines Environment organization.


This position works onsite at United's Network Operations Center in Arlington Heights, IL.

Qualifications

What's needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Associate's degree in related fields such as critical facility operations and maintenance
  • 4+ years' related experience working as a critical facilities engineer or working in a facilities environment with exposure to electrical, mechanical, plumbing and refrigeration type equipment
  • Prior building automation experience
  • Critical facilities systems experience
  • Well versed in NEC and NFPA-75 rules and regulations.
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, stoop, push, pull, reach and lift as required, on a continuous basis, with items that can weigh up to 75lbs
  • Ability to work extended hours within a Data Center Environment and typically within a heat range of 60 degrees Fahrenheit upwards of 110 degrees Fahrenheit while following OSHA driven work rest cycles.
  • Requires ability to climb and utilize a ladder varying in types from A-Frame to extension ladders at various heights.
  • Understands the implications of work to make sound recommendations for solutions.
  • Consistently demonstrate and follow established procedures for assigned activities and collaborate cross functional with teams as well as vendors and suppliers to achieve goals.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of relevant work experience in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Automation Software
  • 7+ years of experience in a related field
  • 5+ years building automation experience
  • 8+ years of critical facility system experience
  • 5+ years' experience working in facilities environment with exposure to electrical, mechanical, plumbing and refrigeration type equipment.
  • Well versed in NEC and NFPA rules and regulations, OSHA 10 course completion, IFMA FMP, ASHRAE course completions, stationary boiler operator license and BAS software certifications.
  • Spanish language proficiency
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the capabilities and limitations of generative AI tools and effectively leverages them to support research, analysis, content creation, and problem-solving. Apply critical thinking to validate AI-generated outputs while adhering to organizational policies for responsible AI use, data privacy, and security.
