Manager, Corporate AccountingLocation: Remote - Anywhere in Canada, Hybrid - Toronto, Kingston, Montreal
The total target compensation (TTC) range, including salary and target bonus, is $106,400 - $155,680. This TTC range is applicable to permanent roles only; fixed-term contract and casual roles are not eligible for annual bonus and would receive only the base salary component.
The Manager plays a critical role in the build out of key areas of the Corporate Accounting function. This role will combine technical and operational accounting knowledge in hands-on process improvement. They will lead monthly close activities and build scalable processes. The primary focus areas will be accounting for investments in subsidiaries and associates, control oversight, and technical accounting. This is a unique opportunity where you will be accountable for building out and launching a new process and framework for financial oversight and monitoring of our investee entities and subsidiaries. The incumbent will execute independently and in collaboration with other business units and team members under the guidance of the Director, Corporate Accounting.
What you'll be working on
Process Build-Out & Investee Oversight
- Design, implement, and scale standardized operating procedures for monitoring subsidiary and minority interest investment accounting.
- Develop, deploy, and maintain standard reporting packages and information from subsidiary and minority interest entities.
- Create and maintain documentation for established standard operating procedures.
- Establish a structured governance cadence to oversee period-end accounting, subsidiary integrations, and carrying costs.
- Develop standardized, scalable reporting processes to give leadership clear visibility into investee performance and risks.
- Leverage available data and technical tooling to support process enhancement.
Internal Controls & Subsidiary Assessment
- Assess and evaluate the internal control over financial reporting ("ICFOR") environments at the subsidiary level to identify financial risks or process gaps.
- Partner collaboratively with subsidiaries to assist them in the development, maintenance, and remediation of sufficient, appropriate internal controls.
- Bridge the gap between corporate compliance expectations and the operational realities of our investees.
- Support the oversight of Empire's ICOFR framework.
- Liaise with Internal auditors on ICFOR controls planning and monitoring processes
Technical Accounting & Core Execution
- Review the reporting packages to identify accounting issues, unexpected business activities and other key considerations as applicable for Empire Life.
- Complete period end accounting for minority interests and subsidiary consolidations.
- Lead proactive investigations and resolve issues directly with subsidiaries, minority interest entities, or line of business teams.
- Lead subsidiary accounting policy reviews, integration, and ongoing oversight.
- Understand and speak to the parent-company accounting impacts of new business initiatives.
- Manage assigned period-end working papers and review detailed reconciliations for assigned General Ledger accounts.
- Research complex accounting issues and draft technical accounting memos addressing operational, controls, and cross-functional impacts.
- Assist with implementation of accounting memo conclusions.
- Support requests during internal and external audits.
- Participate in other projects as assigned.
What we're looking for you to have- CPA designation.
- Completion of a university degree with courses in accounting, business and mathematics.
- 4 to 6 years of progressive accounting experience ideally in the financial services/insurance industry.
- Experience working in entities reporting within the IFRS framework.
- Experience designing and implementing processes and controls.
- Experience with consolidation, intercompany, and equity accounting.
- Experience working in multi-entity and independently operated environments.
- Experience working with multiple contributors and stakeholders.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel competency (e.g., pivot tables, LOOKUPS, complex formulas) and experience with other Microsoft Office suite tools.
- Experience working in ERP systems such as Microsoft AX/ Dynamics, Workday, or Oracle/ NetSuite.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) for interacting with team members, internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and adapt within a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain accuracy and strong attention to detail.
It would be nice for you to have- Experience working with data querying/reporting tools such as Power BI
- Experience with Workday
Working Conditions- Empire Life operates under Hybrid work environment. Staff working remotely are required to work within Canada.
- Occasional travel to the Kingston Head Office is required.
