Position Description

Reporting to the Manager Maintenance II, the Manager Controls is responsible for providing leadership for the Automation Team, driving continuous improvement projects, supporting production attainment goals, ensuring critical system calibrations are completed on time and accurately, leading infrastructure automation upgrades to keep automation systems up-to-date and mitigate obsolescence. In addition, the Manager Controls will be an expert in PLC, HMI, SCADA, VFD, and Servo System programming and troubleshooting, as well as a master in Ethernet Network configuration and diagnostics and developing the SQL Server. This position will also work to enhance the skills of Controls Technicians, Electricians, and Instrumentation Technicians through developing training development plans and organizing and delivering relevant training sessions.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Adhere to and ensure compliance to all health and safety policies/procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE) while working.
  • Adhere to and ensure compliance to food quality and food safety as per quality standards and/or Safe Quality Food requirements.
  • Leads and directs the work of other employees and has responsibility for personnel actions including hiring, performance management, and termination.
  • Provides training, direction and instruction and conducts performance evaluations.
  • Provides guidance and training on work standards and expected outcomes.
  • Lead and prioritize a team that provides immediate support to production and maintenance with focus on plant attainment goals
  • Continuously improving manufacturing processes in terms of quality and performance measurements and identifying and eliminating bottleneck areas.
  • Design, document, troubleshoot and lead the launch of new products and processes from an automation perspective
  • Identify and solve safety concerns encountered during design and study of manufacturing processes.
  • Work with production to make modifications to equipment and work areas for maximum efficiency of operation
  • Maintain a knowledge base in the capacity of existing utilities and the current level of utilization.
  • Stay abreast of the latest safety, environmental and other regulations which affect the facility to ensure compliance.
  • Develop and support the capital project planning and manage installation projects.
  • Oversee the automation of the equipment and the facility to ensure the company receives maximum utilization of its assets.
  • Reviews, hires, evaluates, counsels, disciplines and discharges employees as necessary to ensure department meets or exceeds productivity requirements.
  • Evaluates and recommends improvements to product manufacturability.
  • Ensure compliance to all OHSA and environmental regulatory and corporate standards. Investigate and identify root causes of any non-compliance.
  • Oversee effective deployment of human resources throughout the plant and ensure the correct administration of the collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Ensure proper recommended spare parts and quantities are added to stockroom to minimize downtime.
  • Perform routine system PMs on time and manage backup and disaster recovery programs.
  • Support MOC process and investigations.
  • Various administrative duties (scheduling, Payroll, Audit support, RCAs).
  • Maintain process documentation (P+ID, ladder, CAD drawings).
  • Develop and adhere to monthly/annual budgets in variable costs, R&M, and capital expenditures.


Required Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Windows, Excel, & Outlook) with the ability to learn new applications as required. SAP experience is highly preferred.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors' Degree, Advanced Training or Equivalent Work experience.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in industrial control systems.
  • 2+ years in a supervisory or lead role preferred.
  • Proficiency in PLCs (Allen Bradley, Siemens and B&R), VFDs (AB, SQ D), Servo's (AB, Elau, Fuji, Rexroth...), HMIs (AB,Zenon, Ifix) and Networks (DeviceNet, ControlNet, Remote IO, ProfiBUS, ASI and Ethernet).
  • Working Knowledge of Robotics (Kuka, Fanuc).


Working Conditions:

  • Work Schedule: Primarily Monday - Friday but must be flexible to work nights and/or weekends as needed to support the business.
  • Work Environment: Operating in a fast-paced production plant with numerous moving parts. Noise levels require hearing protection and temperatures can get very hot and/or relatively cold. The environment is structured and supervised, with clear production targets and schedules to meet.
  • Floor Presence Expectation: minimum of 65%

  • Travel anticipated: Rarely

  • Visual/Sensory - This position requires attention to detail, requiring attention with one or two senses at a time.
