Position Summary

The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading and overseeing maintenance operations to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant equipment, machinery, and facility systems. This position is accountable for maximizing equipment uptime, supporting production requirements, and maintaining effective preventive and predictive maintenance programs.

The Maintenance Supervisor provides leadership and development to maintenance personnel, manages maintenance and capital projects, oversees contractors and facility systems, and drives continuous improvement through standardized work practices, Lean Manufacturing principles, and effective maintenance processes. This position works closely with Operations and other departments to support safety, quality, productivity, cost, and overall business objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day activities of the maintenance function and ensure maintenance resources are effectively prioritized to support production and operational requirements.
  • Develop and execute short- and long-term maintenance strategies that support equipment reliability, operational performance, and business objectives.
  • Develop staffing plans based on current and future maintenance needs and ensure the department maintains the appropriate balance of technical skills and capabilities.
  • Lead, coach, train, and develop maintenance employees, including establishing performance expectations, providing feedback, supporting cross-training and development, and addressing performance or conduct concerns as appropriate.
  • Ensure maintenance employees are properly trained to perform assigned work safely and effectively and that required training is appropriately documented.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment and promote employee engagement, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance programs designed to improve equipment reliability and minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Review production, quality, maintenance, and equipment performance information to identify trends, recurring issues, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Coordinate and prioritize equipment repairs in partnership with Operations leadership based on production requirements and business needs.
  • Manage major machinery installations, equipment overhauls, repairs, and other maintenance-related projects.
  • Develop structured project management processes to effectively manage project scope, labor, materials, schedules, costs, and resource allocation.
  • Develop and submit capital expansion plans for approval and manage approved projects to established schedules and budgets.
  • Prepare and manage the annual maintenance budget and monitor departmental expenditures.
  • Manage outside contractors, including the bidding and selection process, project execution, cost and schedule management, and compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Apply Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement principles to improve safety, quality, service, cost, efficiency, and maintenance processes.
  • Establish and maintain Standard Work and routine audit practices for maintenance activities and support ongoing 5S initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain effective maintenance work-order tracking, prioritization, and resource allocation processes.
  • Oversee the installation, maintenance, and operation of facility systems within the department's responsibility, including HVAC, fire alarm, and security system hardware.
  • Support compliance with applicable building codes and local, state, and federal requirements within the scope of maintenance and facility responsibilities.
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor applicable environmental programs, including Storm Water Prevention and Spill Prevention programs, and ensure required environmental training is completed.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve environmental practices, including recycling, material substitution, and other operational improvements.
  • Communicate maintenance activities, project status, equipment concerns, and anticipated completion timelines to appropriate internal stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned in support of department and Company objectives.


Position Requirements

  • Engineering degree preferred; equivalent combination of relevant education, technical training, and professional experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 10 years of maintenance experience in a heavy industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully leading and developing skilled maintenance technicians.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial maintenance operations, equipment troubleshooting, repair practices, and equipment reliability.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Demonstrated project management experience, including management of project schedules, budgets, labor, materials, and outside contractors.
  • Knowledge of PLC programming and troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement principles and tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and apply mathematical concepts relevant to maintenance operations.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to establish expectations, coach and develop employees, manage performance, and resolve conflict professionally.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues, evaluate information, and implement effective solutions.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and operational priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, and prioritize work for both self and others.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and organizational levels.
