Position Summary

Marathon Petroleum Company is seeking a full-time Machinery & Mechanical Supervisor to lead maintenance execution for outside and inside machinists at the Mandan Refinery. This role is responsible for increasing rotating equipment mechanical availability and reliability through safe, reliable, and compliant execution of maintenance activities.

This position serves as the primary interface between Operations, Maintenance, and supporting functions, while supporting the Maintenance execution team and ensuring optimal utilization of the refinery outside and inside machinist crafts. This role works collaboratively with supervisors, Planning & Scheduling, and Reliability teams to develop repair strategies and maintain mechanical refinery equipment in support of continuous 24-hour operations.

This requires strong safety leadership and a consistent safety focus when planning and executing work. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, organizational, critical thinking, and strategic thinking skills.

This position is based in Mandan, ND, and reports to the Craft Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads daily safety meetings with outside and inside machinists and ensures MPC policies and practices are followed. Maintains active and visible presence to promote a safe working environment.
  • Performs safety audits to support the safe work permitting process and drive improvements across all aspects of the organization.
  • Participates in incident investigations and complete Intelex assignments such as Incident Investigations, Recommendations, and MOC tasks.
  • Ensures repairs, equipment testing and calibrations meet MPC policies and procedure requirements.
  • Works with other various departments to develop strategies to improve equipment life cycle cost, repair quality and reliability. Assist the Planning and Warehouse department with equipment repair plans and equipment sparing strategies.
  • Drives Machine Shop repair planning and execution. Communicates with key stakeholders on status of critical repairs. Interfaces with Engineering to develop repair plans on critical equipment.
  • Ensures equipment maintenance records are maintained and acts as a quality leader for machinery repairs. Properly complete and close out work orders, ensures repair notes are properly documented.
  • Coordinates with vendors to facilitate off-site repair of machinery. Performs repair shop audits and addresses vendor quality issues.
  • Identifies inspection and repair scope for Routine Maintenance, Major Maintenance, and TAR activities.
  • Updates daily and weekly schedule databases for the planning and execution of machinery repairs. Develops and maintains machine shop KPI’s.
  • Lead by example, coach and mentor employees to improve performance and skills. Accountable for fair and uniform application of policies and procedures.
  • Ensures craft are provided opportunities for advancement and training. Acts as training quality leads and facilitates sign-off of competency assessments.
  • Stays abreast of developing technologies applicable to rotating equipment monitoring, inspection and repair.

Education and Experience

  • HS Diploma or GED required.
  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in mechanical maintenance or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 4 years mechanical experience required; Refining or Petrochemical industry preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Experience in laser alignment, field balancing, pump mechanic, steam turbine mechanic, compressor mechanic preferred.
  • Working knowledge of mills, lathes, balance machines and relief valve rebuilding preferred.
  • The work schedule for this position is a Monday – Thursday 4/10 schedule. The position will be expected to support a rotating on-call calendar and work additional or off hours to support a 24-hour production centered operation.
  • Must be willing to support the needs of the Dickinson Renewable Diesel Facility on a special project, outage/turnaround, temp assignment or as needed basis. 

Skills

  • Must have working knowledge of how to read and understand blueprints, schematic readings and P&IDs.
  • Must have strong initiative, leadership, and collaboration skills, with proactive troubleshooting and strategic/critical thinking to drive effective problem solving.
  • Must be able to function in a team environment and effectively communicate with personnel of all levels and across multiple disciplines to include Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance.
  • Must be able to physically perform the essential job functions including, but not limited to, wearing all required PPE, working at elevated heights, confined space entry, fall protection, and respirator usage.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook required.
  • Experience with SAP is preferred.
