Overview

TransitAmerica Services, Inc. / ACI joint venture, the operator of CTRail passenger service in Connecticut, is currently seeking certified LocomotiveEngineers for future service expansions in New Haven, CT.

The pay rate for this position is $51.01 per hour.

Duties and Responsibilities:

*This is a non-exhaustive overview of the job duties for this position.
  • Operate rail passenger equipment in a safe and efficient manner in compliance with Federal and State regulations, NORAC Operating Rules, Amtrak Air Brake & Train Handling Rules, Timetables and Special Instructions, Safety Rules, TASI/ACI Special Instructions and CTrail Contractual Instructions.
  • Operates equipment during varying work hours within a 24/7 transportation environment maintaining alertness, situational awareness and vigilance.
  • Thinks and functions independently and utilizes clear and effective verbal communication skills in interaction with fellow crew members and other personnel responsible for safe and efficient train movement.
  • Accepts responsibility for the safety and security of all passengers and crew members.
  • Accepts responsibility for employees assigned to a position for the purpose of training or familiarization.
  • Provide customer service to all passengers upon request or as needed.

  • Perform the necessary procedures to qualify the consist prior to departing the initial terminal, and at other intermediate locations as required.
  • Perform switching assignments as requested in cooperation with other departments.
  • Perform all required inspections, tests, procedures and complete all required paperwork.
  • Identify and document equipment defects on the Daily Equipment Inspection Report.
  • Reports mechanical malfunctions and coordinates with the mechanical department to correct mechanical or safety problems identified on equipment.
  • Work as a crew member along with fare enforcement team members assigned to their equipment.
  • Receives and complies with en-route instructions from Dispatch Center.
  • Reports to the proper authority any and all deficiencies and safety concerns encountered on the rail corridor.
  • Prepares reports as required.
  • Follows all other instructions from Company Officers.
  • The employee can be depended on to report to work at the scheduled time and is seldom absent from work.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must maintain a valid Engineer Certification under 49 CFR Part 240.
  • Three years of safe, increasingly responsible railroad experience as a certified locomotive engineer; passenger rail operations is preferable.
  • Any combination of education and experience that could provide the knowledge and ability to pass the required initial and annual examinations.
  • Must not have had any railroad operating rule violations or any positive drug and alcohol test results within the past five years.
  • Ability to operate diesel locomotives and passenger control cars.
  • Ability to successfully complete all training and on-going training as required by the job.
  • Accepts responsibility for the safety and security of all passengers and crew members.
  • Accepts responsibility for compliance with rules and regulations without direct supervision.
  • Must be capable of communicating clearly and effectively with others.
  • Initiates and responds to oral and written communication.
  • Adheres to the highest levels of professionalism at all times by demonstrating honesty, integrity and maturity.
  • Must be able to complete CPR/AED/First Aid certification training successfully and be able to administer in any situation while on duty.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and endorsements as required per position.
  • Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
    • This position requires you to pass and maintain a DOT medical evaluation to drive a Herzog commercial vehicle.
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.


Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described below must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this role. This position will be physically demanding at times. This is a non-exhaustive overview of the physical requirements of this job.
  • Able to walk on uneven surfaces up to one-half mile.
  • Maintain balance for an extended period of time while train is in motion.
  • Must be able to be aware of surroundings and follow verbal commands while being exposed to moderately loud noises on a daily basis.
  • Work in a confined access/space environment with a width of 16 inches.
  • Must be able to adapt to various temperature extremes including but not limited to heat, cold, moisture and wind.
  • Regularly sit and stand for an extended period of time.
  • Able to tolerate repetitive movements, squatting/bending, and overhead reaching.
  • Able to lift up to shoulder height and horizontally transfer up to 35 pounds for a distance up to 10 feet.
  • Regularly kneel, bend, squat for extended periods of time.
  • Regularly reach overhead.
  • Regularly grasp/squeeze equipment with a force up to 20 pounds.
  • Regularly ascend/descend a platform with a height of up to 36 inches from the floor.
  • Regularly ascend and descend an 8 step ladder while carrying up to 20 pounds.
  • Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
  • Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals as required by the position.
  • Able to work in a safety sensitive work environment.
