Job Summary:

NHEC is seeking a Line Design Technician to support the planning, design, and development of overhead and underground electric distribution facilities that provide safe, reliable service to our members. In this role, you will work both in the field and office environment, collaborating with members, contractors, municipalities, and internal departments to design electric service installations, system improvements, and line extensions.

Reporting through the Engineering and Line Design department, the Line Design Technician is responsible for surveying and staking electric distribution projects, preparing construction documentation and cost estimates, obtaining easements and permits, and ensuring designs comply with Cooperative standards and applicable codes. This position is idea for individuals who enjoy a combination of technical work, field work, problem-solving, and member interaction.

Requirements

Education:

• A minimum of a high school graduate or equivalent preferred.
• A solid background in all high school mathematics desired.
• Additional schooling in electricity, technical school, or mathematics a plus.

Experience:

• Two to three years in an electrical background, and/or customer service-oriented position desired.
• Two-to-four-year degree in electrical or technical background may substitute for experience.
• Line worker experience is a plus.

Job Knowledge:

• Must possess a working knowledge of the construction, maintenance and operations of overhead and underground distribution lines including metering, transformers, voltage regulators, oil and electronic reclosers and capacitors.
• Must have a working knowledge of the National Electric Code, Safety Codes, OSHA Regulations, assembly and material specifications, construction work practices and be willing to attend and successfully complete courses relating specifically to this job description.
• Must be able to read schematic drawings, maps, and instruction manuals.
• Must be knowledgeable of construction specifications, tariffs, and applicable sections of NEC and NESC.
• Must be able to be knowledgeable of telephone, cable TV, code requirements and service territory agreements.
• Must be able to prepare drawings, read maps and design lines by staking all single phase and multi-phase overhead and underground distribution lines, including new services, extensions/system improvements and major developments.
• Must be knowledgeable of and able to obtain easements and prepare accurate staking sheets, pole license forms, transmission line crossing permits, railroad crossing permits and any other documents as may be required.
• Performs field planning activities by becoming competent with cost estimate preparations.

Abilities:

• Should be skilled in organization, planning, and communication and be able to effectively discuss work with members, state, and local representatives.
• Should possess an in depth conceptual and working knowledge of utility regulations as required by state and federal agencies.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and must meet the carrier standard for insurability.
• Must be computer literate and able to perform intermediate computer skills to complete required tasks, forms, and reports.
• Should be able to work independently and make decisions without supervision.
• Mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity and good legible penmen ship is necessary.
• Ability to prepare cost estimates and design lines by staking multi-phase overhead distribution lines and services by NHEC construction standards.
• Must have physical ability and stamina to work in the field. Familiarity of local service area is desirable.
• Must obtain registration as a Notary Public or Justice of the Peace.

Working Conditions:

Must work inside and outside, occasionally under adverse weather conditions and long hours. Overtime is required with occasional overnight travel to attend training sessions or to assist other utilities during major storms is required.

Assistance with power restoration efforts is required of all employees. Depending on the severity and duration of power outages, employees may be required to assume duties and work hours that are outside of their normal working conditions. Such assistance may require working nights, weekends and holidays and may involve considerable extra hours. In order to meet this working condition, all employees are required to provide a personal phone number where they may be reached after hours. This number will only be used for internal purposes.

Compensation:

The salary range for this position is $32.97 - $45.78 per hour based on the agreement with IBEW. Pay is based on non-discriminatory factors including but not limited to work experience, education, licensure requirements, proficiency and qualifications required for the role. The base pay is just one component of NHEC's total compensation package for employees.
