Summary:The Life Science Engineer, Lead is the senior technical person at an assigned Johnson & Johnson site under the Enterprise Laboratory Instrument Services (ELIS) program. The role carries a full service caseload and, alongside it, technical authority for the site.
This is a working lead, not a manager. The Lead performs calibration, scheduled maintenance, demand maintenance and repair on the site asset base like any engineer, and is additionally the person the site turns to when a repair is beyond another engineer, when a vendor recommendation needs challenging, or when a technical judgment has to be made and nobody more senior is on site.
What you will do:Service delivery:
- Perform calibration, scheduled maintenance (SM), demand maintenance (DM), diagnostics and repair across the assigned site asset base
- Carry a full service caseload alongside the lead responsibilities of the role
- Restore instruments to service and verify performance against manufacturer specification before release
- Support instrument installation, relocation, qualification and decommissioning alongside the Lifecycle and Relocations Coordinator
- Cover satellite locations assigned to the site, including remote technical support where an in-person visit is not warranted
Technical authority for the site:- Act as the technical escalation point for site engineers and technicians on difficult diagnostics and repairs
- Determine whether a reported issue is an instrument fault, an operator or method issue, a consumable or sample issue, or an environmental condition, before a service call is raised
- Review vendor and OEM diagnoses and quoted repairs, and challenge scope that is disproportionate to the fault
- Make the return-to-service decision on instruments where site judgment is required
- Provide technical input on repair versus replace, end of life and capital replacement candidates
Leading the technical work:- Allocate technical work across site engineers and technicians day to day in agreement with the Site Operations Manager
- Coach and develop site technical staff on platform knowledge, diagnostic method and documentation quality
- Verify that engineers and technicians are qualified on a platform before they work on it independently
- Build platform coverage depth so no single instrument family depends on one person
- Identify training needs and feed them to the Technical Training Specialist
Self-perform expansion:- Identify assets where Renovo self-perform service is technically viable and build the case with usage and failure evidence
- Support the qualification path for new platforms brought in scope, including training, tooling and documentation requirements
- Advise on parts, tooling and test equipment needed to expand self-perform coverage at the site
- Track first-time-fix and repeat-fault patterns and act on them
Data and record accountability:- Own accuracy of the technical record for work performed, including fault found, action taken, parts used and labor time
- Ensure asset configuration, location and status are correct in the system of record after any work that changes them
- Close work orders with complete and accurate data so reporting, invoicing and compliance evidence hold up
- Raise record discrepancies found in the field rather than working around them
Vendor technical interface:- Witness and technically review vendor work where the asset criticality or the quote value warrants it
- Provide the technical basis on which the coordination team approves or rejects a vendor invoice
Quality, compliance and safety:- Complete all documentation to GxP and client quality system requirements
- Support audits, quality reviews and regulatory inspections with technical evidence
- Follow laboratory safety requirements including biological, chemical, electrical and cryogenic hazards, and exercise stop-work authority when a task cannot be performed safely
- Maintain calibration status and traceability of test equipment used
Escort and vendor hosting, a standing expectation of every site-based role:- Escort and host OEM and third-party personnel in client laboratories and equipment areas, on request and regardless of whose scope the instrument sits in
- Confirm third-party personnel are inducted, badged, trained, and compliant with client site access and safety requirements before they enter a laboratory
- Remain with third-party personnel while they work where the area, the hazard, or the client requires continuous accompaniment
- Confirm the work performed matches what was authorized, and that the area is left clean, safe, and operational
- Verify the service report or work record is complete before the third party leaves site, and route it for invoice verification
- Escalate immediately where a third party arrives unannounced, without correct documentation, or attempts work outside the authorized scope
Qualifications:- 7+ years of hands-on service experience on laboratory or analytical instrumentation, or equivalent biomedical equipment service experience
- Demonstrated depth on multiple instrument platforms, which may include chromatography, mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, plate-based detection, centrifugation, cell culture or laboratory automation
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose faults beyond the manufacturer service manual
- Experience acting as a technical reference point for other engineers, whether or not the role carried a formal title
- Experience working inside a client facility as an embedded service provider strongly preferred
- Working knowledge of GxP requirements, calibration traceability and data integrity expectations
- Experience with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS)
- Experience in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology or research environment strongly preferred.
Education/Special Training:- Associate degree or technical diploma in electronics, instrumentation, engineering technology, biomedical equipment technology or a related field. Equivalent experience or military technical training considered
- OEM platform training on relevant instrument families required or supported after hire
- Training in laboratory safety, GxP and data integrity provided or required
- Progression toward CBET or equivalent certification supported

Safety Requirements:- Abide by and follow Renovo safety policies, procedures, and injury and illness prevention expectations
- Maintain a safe working environment for self and others when visiting customer sites, laboratories, offices, or operational environments
- Follow applicable customer site safety requirements, OSHA guidelines, and laboratory or facility-specific procedures as required
- Complete required safety training assignments on time
Physical Requirements:- Regular work in active laboratory environments, including areas with biological, chemical, electrical and cryogenic hazards
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment for extended periods
- Ability to kneel, bend, reach and work in confined equipment spaces
- Occasional lifting up to 25 kilograms with appropriate assistance or equipment.
Travel approximately 10 to 20 percent, covering assigned satellite locations, OEM training and peer site support.
