Position DescriptionTacoma Public Library is looking for a Library Facilities and Capital Projects Manager to join their team! In this role you will be responsible for the strategic oversight and management of the Library's Facilities Department, ensuring that facilities, grounds, assets, and vehicles are properly maintained, usable, clean, safe, and accessible for staff and the community. This position leads both daily operations and long-term capital planning, including construction, renovation, and infrastructure improvement projects. This position guides capital investments and departmental direction and is responsible for major investments in physical assets, including long-term planning, design, permitting, and construction of new facilities or significant renovations.
Responsibilities Include:- Direct the maintenance of Tacoma Public Library facilities, grounds, and vehicles
- Manage the planning and execution of daily operations and major projects, including construction, renovations, and infrastructure improvements
- Lead short- and long-term facilities planning, including budget development and management, project design, permitting, contractor coordination, and compliance with applicable codes and standards
- Manage Facilities Department staff, including hiring, training, directing work, conducting performance evaluations, and recommending discipline
- Provides complex construction project management, including coordination with internal stakeholders and external contractors
- Ensure alignment of facilities operations and capital projects with organizational goals and community needs
Qualifications A combination equivalent to:- Bachelor's degree in facilities management, construction management, engineering, or a related field.
- Three (3) years of experience in facility management, construction management, engineering, or related field, including one year at lead or supervisory level.
*Relevant education and experience may substitute for one another on a year-for-year basisLICENSING, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS- A valid Washington State Driver's License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.
Knowledge & Skills - Knowledge of facilities operations, construction management, and capital project planning.
- Familiarity with building codes, permitting processes, and safety regulations.
- Knowledge of construction and building trades, such as electrical, mechanical, carpentry, plumbing, painting and HVAC systems.
- Skill in managing budgets, schedules, and multiple concurrent projects.
- Proficiency in project management tools and software.
- Skill in leading and managing teams.
- Skill in customer service and commitment to delivering high-quality, value-added services.
- Skill in holding self and others accountable for achieving outcomes; monitoring progress and modeling organizational expectations.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Skill in applying de-escalation and trauma-informed approaches when engaging with individuals experiencing crisis, including those facing houselessness, substance use, or mental health challenges, to ensure safety, empathy, and dignity for all.

The Tacoma Public Library is not a department of the City of Tacoma and the Library's employees are not employees of the City. The Library is a separate entity with its own governing body. The Library's governing body is the Tacoma Public Library Board of Trustees.
Employees of the City of Tacoma who accept employment with the Tacoma Public Library will lose their City of Tacoma employee seniority. They will also find that their leave accruals, and some of the benefits enjoyed as employees of the City of Tacoma do not carry over when they are hired for a position with the Tacoma Public Library.
