Full Job Description
Director, Payments Product

Let's be honest, you probably didn't realize eBay is more than just the marketplace for things people love. eBay is a fintech platform in the making, and we're looking for an experienced payments product lawyer to help us get there. With tens of billions of dollars flowing through our marketplace each year, payments are at the heart of the eBay experience-and we're continuing to invest in new ways to make buying, selling, and moving money simpler, safer, and more seamless around the world.

This isn't just any product counsel role. It's a chance to join the e-commerce OG at a pivotal moment and help shape the next generation of payments and financial services for one of the world's largest marketplaces.

This is not a plug-and-play role. We need an experienced, curious, and pragmatic product lawyer who can get into the weeds with our Product and Engineering teams, understand how our payments products actually work, and help turn complex legal and regulatory requirements into thoughtful product solutions. You'll advise on products from idea to launch and beyond, tackle novel questions at the intersection of technology, commerce, and financial services, and help us find a path forward when the answer isn't obvious.

You will have a real seat at the table.

A Day in the Life of Our Payments Product Guru

You'll be a trusted legal co-pilot to our Payments Product and Engineering teams as they build and evolve the products that power commerce on eBay. You'll get involved early-not just when a product is ready to launch-and help teams think through legal and regulatory considerations as part of how products are designed and built.

You'll be:
  • Embedded in the Product: You'll partner closely with Product, Engineering, Risk, Compliance, and Operations from ideation through launch and beyond. You'll dig into product requirements, user experiences, funds flows, and technical architecture to understand what we're building, why we are building it, and help teams build it thoughtfully.
  • A Regulatory Whisperer: Payments regulation is complicated. Your job is to make it less so. You'll navigate the evolving legal and regulatory landscape for payments and financial services and translate complex requirements into clear, actionable guidance for Product, Business and Engineering teams.
  • A Builder, Not Just a Reviewer: You won't simply tell teams whether something presents legal risk. You'll work alongside them to understand what they're trying to accomplish, identify the real issues, and develop practical solutions that enable innovation while managing risk responsibly.
  • A Product Launch Co-Pilot: You'll advise on new payments products, features, and experiences from concept through launch, helping teams spot issues early, make informed tradeoffs, and navigate the legal and regulatory questions that come with building payments products at global scale.
  • Our Payments Ecosystem Expert: You'll develop a deep understanding of how money moves across eBay and the broader payments ecosystem-including payment processing and acquiring, card networks, payouts, stored value and wallets, and emerging payment methods-and apply that knowledge to the products we're building.
  • A Scaler: You'll help us build smarter ways of working as our payments business evolves, including developing practical frameworks, playbooks, and product review processes that help teams identify issues earlier and make good decisions faster.
  • The Go-To Problem-Solver: Product teams will seek you out for your judgment, not just your legal analysis. You'll be comfortable with ambiguity, willing to ask the questions no one else has thought of, empowered to move the needle, and focus on finding a responsible path forward rather than simply flagging risk.
  • Team Player Extraordinaire: Collaboration isn't just a buzzword here. You'll work with colleagues across Product, Engineering, Compliance, Risk, Privacy, Operations and Legal, as well as teams around the world, all united by a common goal: building the future of commerce.

What You'll Need to Bring to the Table
  • A J.D. from an accredited law school and an active license to practice law in at least one U.S. state.
  • 10+ years of relevant legal experience, with significant experience providing payments counseling to fintechs, financial services, and/or technology companies.
  • Meaningful experience partnering directly with Product and Engineering teams and advising throughout the product lifecycle-from early design and development through launch and ongoing operation.
  • Deep knowledge of the payments ecosystem and the legal and regulatory frameworks that apply to payments products, particularly in the context of merchants, marketplaces, or technology platforms.
  • Familiarity with money transmission, electronic funds transfers and consumer protection, card network rules, bank payments, financial crime and sanctions requirements, and other laws, regulations, and industry rules relevant to payments.
  • The ability-and curiosity-to get into the details. You should be comfortable understanding product requirements, user journeys, technical systems and funds flows, and translating legal requirements into practical product guidance.
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to navigate novel legal questions where the law, technology, or business model may be evolving and there isn't always a perfect precedent or obvious answer.
  • A practical, solutions-oriented mindset. You don't just identify problems; you help teams understand the tradeoffs and figure out how to accomplish their goals responsibly.
  • The ability to communicate complicated legal concepts plainly and give clear advice that Product, Engineering, and business teams can actually use.
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and operate with autonomy. You should be comfortable with ambiguity and have a bias for action.
  • A sense of humor and an ability not to take yourself too seriously.
