Job Description:

Role Definition:

Sustainment Engineering requires investigations and analyses in multiple technical areas like Engineering and Logistics to ensure a continued supply and maintenance of our electrical parts and systems with managed risk. The Sustainment Project lead will be responsible to assist others or lead the planning and development of multiple complex life-extension solutions for Electrical components to assure continued Caterpillar Product functionality. The life-extension solution could involve designing out end-of-life or obsolete piece parts, redesigning components, completing a supplier transfer, or defining a component repair option.

What You Will Do:
  • Coach and develop team members through mentoring.
  • Assist others or lead the creation and development of new components or systems to replace legacy parts.
  • Assist supply specialists and buyers with supplier development and supplier performance.
  • Partner with suppliers to improve quality, manage transitions, evaluate sourcing risks, and ensure continuity of supply.
  • Develop and document functional requirements and translating into detail design documents.
  • Participate in or lead proposal preparation, cost estimates, and technical reports.
  • Understand Electrical component design and functionality in systems.
  • Manage component sustainment by understanding production requirements and removal dates, service requirements, and component supply risk.
  • Develop component or family long term sustainment plans by understanding the current and future obsolescence issues and any required change validation.
  • Utilize Caterpillar and supplier information to monitor and resolve quality or reliability issues.
  • Understand Product structure and required Engineering Data System maintenance and print change activities.


Degree Requirement

Requires a degree in an accredited Mechanical or Electrical Engineering field.

  • Plans, estimates, staffs, organizes and monitors significant projects.
  • Identifies risks and vulnerabilities; creates contingency plans.
  • Conducts regular and ad-hoc project reviews with project team, sponsors, and clients.
  • Maintains open communication among project participants and interested parties.
  • Communicates reporting requirements; creates monitoring and control mechanisms.


Supplier Management - MFG: Knowledge of processes and methods to effectively manage business relationships and transactions with suppliers of raw materials or product components; ability to apply related knowledge, experience and skills into real practice.

Level Extensive Experience:
  • Facilitates supplier partnering arrangements that share risk and reward.
  • Monitors supplier performance; works to resolve discrepancies between performance and agreements.
  • Develops quality standards and controls for suppliers.
  • Builds and maintains partnerships with multiple and/or large suppliers.
  • Evaluates issues and terminates supplier relationships as appropriate; works with legal departments.
  • Ensures the fulfillment of report and record-keeping requirements.

Summary Pay Range:

$128,470.00 - $192,710.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
