Job Description Summary
Systems engineering is a cross-functional engineering discipline centered on an approach, mindset, and process. All activities that consider both the business and the technical needs of the customers with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the user's needs. The discipline that executes a robust process of design, creation, and optimization of systems, consisting of identification and quantification of system requirements, creation of alternate system design concepts, performance of design trade studies, selection and implementation of the best designs and verification that the design is properly integrated and executed. Process that proceeds from concept to production to operation.

Responsible for departmental operations planning/execution or is focused on execution of professional activities within a technical discipline. Functions with some autonomy but guided by established policies or review of end results.
The job allows modification of procedures and practices covering work as long as the end results meet standards of acceptability (quality, volume, timeliness etc.).

The Services Instrumentation and Controls C10 / C35.6 systems engineer is responsible for designing, developing and testing Instrumentation and Control (I&C) platforms and systems that control safety critical functions for the BWRX-300 Small Module Reactor. This role requires technical problem solving, requirements management, and effective communication/collaboration with other teams and engineering disciplines.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Conducts component and product integration.
  • All activities that span multiple components and products and are concerned with how to integrate for maximum performance and operability.
  • Manages product and systems requirements, specifications and flow down.
  • Drives validation and verification activities for the overall product/system, including system level testing.
  • Responsible for defining product requirements for the module / component / subcontractors and partners teams.
  • Manages interface between components and execution organizations.
  • Responsible for driving CTQ / Risk trades within the teams designing the components.
  • Manages the overall product configuration and configuration control system.
  • Includes direct people management responsibility including staffing and performance development.
  • Utilizes in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline and analytical thinking and technical experience to execute policy/strategy.
  • Has knowledge of best practices and how own area integrates with others; is aware of the competition and the factors that differentiate them in the market
  • Uses some judgment and has some ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters to address more complicated manufacturing processes with technical variety and/or interdependent production cycles.
  • Uses technical experience and analytical thinking.
  • Uses multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own teams to arrive at decisions.
  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
  • May lead small projects with low risks and resource requirements.
  • Explains information; developing skills to bring team members to consensus around topics within field.
  • Conveys performance expectations and may handle sensitive issues.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering from an accredited university or college. ​
  • 6 years experience in systems engineering for highly regulated industry.
  • 2 years experience in performing independent, or preferably team based, system design or technical reviews including interfacing with requirements management, independent verification and validation.

Eligibility Requirements

  • For US - This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.
  • For Canada GE will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in Canada for this opening.
  • For Canada - This position will report onsite to the Markham office 3 days a week.

Desired Qualifications

  • Instrumentation and Controls system and / or platform systems engineering experience.
  • Nuclear system engineering experience.
  • Boiling Water Reactor / Small Module Reactor design experience.
  • Masters Degree in electrical, mechanical, systems, computer science, or other equivalent degree from accredited college or university.
  • Solves technical challenges through application of common design patterns and identifying appropriate patterns for use in problem solving.
  • Experience with typical engineering project design methods from requirements definition through confirmation testing of final design.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and ability to articulate clearly.
  • Contributes to creative solutions and challenges status quo.
  • Proactively learns new tools and identifies opportunities for improvement and promotes their adoption​.
  • Systems level thinking / approach.

For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between $98,400.00 and $188,600.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.

 

 

Bonus eligibility: discretionary annual bonus.
