WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Roadway Engineer for our North Carolina Transportation Team in our Greensboro, NC office

Candidates may also be based in our Charlotte, Raleigh, or Mooresville, NC offices.

This Opportunity

The successful candidate should have leadership experience and high-level technical knowledge in civil/roadway design and plans production for traditional delivery and/or alternative delivery projects. Challenge your expertise with the opportunity to work alongside transportation experts that are leading the way on innovative projects in North Carolina, the Southeast Region, and beyond.

The North Carolina Roadway Design Team serves clients from around the region on a wide variety of projects ranging from Major Interstate Reconstruction, Arterial Capacity Improvements, Intersection and Safety Improvement, Pedestrian and Bicycle Infrastructure, and Transit Improvement. The selected candidate will work with State DOT's and local municipal agencies on a variety of projects on a regular basis. This position is an excellent opportunity for personal growth and advancement in our industry as well as building your relationship within the WSP organization on a regional and national level.

Your Impact
  • Lead project tasks for conceptual and preliminary engineering and final design activities, as well as development of construction plans, calculations and specifications.
  • Providing guidance and mentoring of staff and direct work assignments.
  • Coordinate with other design disciplines such as structures, drainage, traffic, and utilities, etc.
  • Participate hands-on in the preparation of Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E).
  • Review, monitor and/or develop complex layouts, sketches, plans, specifications and estimates standards and guidelines, correspondence, and/or prepare reports.
  • Manage projects, lead project tasks, or assist project managers with proactive project coordination and collaboration efforts, including tasks that may require coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Apply high-level civil engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various infrastructure project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
  • Collaborate with professionals, other engineers, planners, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.
  • Remain current in latest civil engineering techniques and practices.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 7+ years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and civil/roadway design.
  • Professional Engineering License in NC or ability to obtain in six months.
  • Significant experience leading design teams on DOT and municipal projects (highway, roadway geometric design and calculations, and roadway plan production).
  • Proficiency in MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer/Geopak roadway design software.
  • Developing skills in project and staff management experience on civil transportation projects.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Commitment to upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Flexible to meet a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience managing small to mid-size projects.
  • Experience with daily mentoring of junior staff.
  • Experience with Alternative Delivery and large transportation projects.
  • Expertise with OpenRoads Designer.
