This Opportunity

WSP currently has a career opportunity for a Lead Piping Engineer to join our team and support mining and metals, oil and gas, heavy industrial projects, and water sectors. This opportunity is for our Salt Lake City, UT office. The following locations will also be considered: Tucson, AZ; Phoenix, AZ or Reno, NV offices.

The position is responsible for managing all aspects of piping engineering discipline. This position will entail leading small to large projects and will include interacting with all members of the project team, including the client, sub-contractors, and on-site construction contractors.

Location: Preferred location is in our Salt Lake City, UT. However, the team will consider alternate locations, including Tucson AZ; Phoenix AZ, or Reno, NV offices.

Your Impact
  • Work closely with the department manager to develop, plan, evaluate and recommend solutions for difficult problems.
  • Contribute to preparation of proposals, discipline estimates, design deliverables including but not limited to calculations/lists/drawings, specifications and other engineering documentation using standards and/or new methods as required.
  • Produce drawings, calculations, and other engineering documentation and follows good engineering practices, relevant codes, and standards.
  • Supervise the preparation or prepare technical specifications for purchased equipment.
  • Coordinate and interface with vendors.
  • Prepare technical evaluations of supplier's proposals.
  • Prepare equipment performance specifications.
  • Develop technical reports.
  • Oversee and check work of other junior and mid-level mechanical engineers and designers.
  • Give effective presentations to customers.
  • Work with and communicate with project management team.
  • Assure that all work on assigned projects is timely, accurate and high quality.
  • Organize, plan, and coordinate own work as well as the resources assigned on a specific project.
  • Perform troubleshooting at operating mine, oil and gas plants, other heavy industrial plants, and water treatment facilities.
  • Experience with slurry pipelines, tailings systems, concentrate lines, and mine infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of abrasion-resistant materials and corrosion mitigation strategies.
  • Support design of pump stations, and process plant tie-ins.
  • Piping and pipeline system design including line sizing, routing, and material selection.
  • Experience with raw water, process water, potable water, and wastewater piping systems.
  • Knowledge of AWWA standards and municipal/industrial water infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of pump stations, treatment facilities, chemical systems, and transmission pipelines.
  • Pump and piping system hydraulic calculations using either Excel, AFT or similar software.
  • Pipe stress analysis using tools such as CAESAR II or AutoPIPE or similar software. • AutoCAD, Revit, or other design program competence.
  • Preparation and review of line lists, valve lists, tie-point lists, and equipment schedules.
  • Will travel for meetings and site visits and accept remote assignments, as required. Approximately 10% - 15% travel.


Who You Are

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license and stamp is required in at least one state in USA with ability to acquire licenses in other states. • An up to date NCEES record.
  • 7 - 10+ years of related engineering experience in an EPCM or similar company is required for this position.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how the mechanical and piping engineering activities integrate into a complete project.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with customers and vendors.
  • Ability to work with administrative supervision and effectively manage multiple and conflicting priorities.
  • Understanding the technical and commercial aspects of the organization's projects and proposals.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications and specialized software packages used for mechanical and piping engineering and design.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry codes such as, but not limited to, ASME, API.
  • Preference will be given to candidate with experience in Mineral / Mining and/or Oil and Gas and/or Water Treatment projects.
  • Must pass background check.


Desired Qualifications
  • MS Degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) from ABET accredited program.
  • Project Management experience or a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification in an engineering consulting environment is a plus.
  • Design-Build project execution experience.
