Job Description

The Opportunity

Shape the World Around You - As a Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the delivery of complex mechanical and piping engineering for mining and industrial projects across Canada. From early concepts through detailed design and execution on major EPCM programs, you will guide multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, efficient, and high-performing systems that help our clients power the world more responsibly.

This position can be located in any of our Canadian offices with preference for Northern Ontario, BC and Atlantic locations.

At WSP, our Resources subsector plays a vital role within our Energy, Resources & Industry (ERI) sector, delivering end-to-end solutions for clients across Canada. For decades, we've provided expertise ranging from economic studies and detailed engineering to procurement, commissioning, site management, and mine closure. Our commitment is simple: meet the highest standards in the industry-and then exceed them.

Your Impact

In this role, you will:
  • Lead as a technical expert on mechanical and piping engineering packages for multidisciplinary mining and industrial projects across all phases-from conceptual studies to detailed engineering and construction support.
  • Apply deep knowledge of codes and standards (ASME B31.3, B31.4, B31.8, ASME VIII Div 1/2, API, TEMA) to develop safe, compliant, and reliable mechanical and piping systems.
  • Direct and review piping layouts, isometrics, bills of materials (BOMs), and fabrication deliverables, ensuring accuracy, constructability, and alignment with project standards.
  • Evaluate, select, and specify rotating equipment-such as pumps, compressors, and blowers-using lifecycle cost, operability, and performance criteria to support long-term asset reliability.
  • Oversee the mechanical design of pressure vessels, heat exchangers, tanks, chutes, bins, hoppers, and conveyor system components in collaboration with structural and process engineering teams.
  • Prepare and review mechanical calculations (e.g., wall thickness, branch reinforcement, external pressure analysis) to verify the integrity and performance of critical assets.
  • Develop and maintain project standards, piping material specifications, valve specifications, and equipment datasheets that drive consistency and quality across projects.
  • Prepare RFQs and lead technical evaluations and comparison reports for bulk materials, valves, specialty components, and rotating equipment, partnering closely with procurement.
  • Resolve complex design and material issues by working collaboratively with engineering, procurement, and construction partners to keep projects on track and on budget.
  • Develop inspection and test plans (ITPs), including hydrostatic testing and NDT requirements for tanks and vessels, to support quality assurance and commissioning.

The Skills That Set You Apart
  • You bring at least12+ years of experience in mechanical engineering within industrial and/or mining environments in a senior capacity.
  • You have a strong track record leading and deliveringEPCM projects across heavy industrial sectors such as mining, mineral processing, ideally with exposure to large, complex brownfield and greenfield projects.
  • You have hands-on experience with the mechanical design of chutes, hoppers, bins, conveyors, and associated structural elements, and understand how these systems perform in harsh operating environments.
  • Experience with dust collection systems, ventilation ducting and flue gas desired.
  • You demonstrate a deep understanding of piping materials, equipment standards, fabrication processes, and construction practices, enabling you to make sound engineering and constructability decisions.
  • You are comfortable developing RFQs, material take-offs (MTOs), technical bid evaluations, and comparison reports, and collaborating closely with supply chain partners.
  • You thrive in LEAN or continuous-improvement-focused environments and bring an improvement mindset to workflows, standards, and project delivery.
  • You hold a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master's degree considered an asset).
  • You are registered, or eligible to register, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada.
