Job Description

Job Summary

Supervises the construction of substations and maintains the electrical and related equipment of a substation and small hydro plant.

What you will do
  • Supervises and takes part in maintaining, constructing and installing equipment in substations and small hydro plant. Installs and maintains high voltage cables.
  • Inspects for, analyzes causes of, and eliminates electrical and mechanical operating difficulties in substations and small hydro plant. Tests equipment, devices, and controls for proper operation.
  • Installs and maintains circuit breakers.
  • Inspects equipment at small hydro plant and substation interconnections.
  • Wires switchboards.
  • Revises drawings and wiring diagrams as necessary.
  • Supervises others assigned to assist in accomplishing assignment.
  • Performs duties of electrician as required (see description for electrician for details).
  • Keeps records and prepares reports as required.
  • Performs other duties which are similar, related or incidental to this position.


Education Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Required Experience
  • 2 years experience working on energized substations as an electrician

Other Requirements
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License prior to the end of trial period
  • Employees in this job classification are covered by the Residency Policy and will be required to live within 20 minutes of headquarters
  • This position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements under 49 CFR Part 40 and FMCSA regulations (Part 382).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Familiarity with electric utility theory along with fundamentals of electricity and with testing apparatus
  • Thorough knowledge of the company Safety Rules and Operating Practices and requirements of the State Electrical Code as it relates to substation construction and maintenance
  • Thorough knowledge of the company's standards of substation construction
  • Understanding of work order procedures and allocation of charges
  • Ability to make understandable sketches and to read maps and construction drawings
  • Ability to make repairs and adjustments on motors, transformers, and other electrical equipment
  • Ability to supervise others
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the job.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
