Full Job Description
The Communications and External Affairs (CXA) organization helps MITRE communicate with clarity, consistency, and impact across the audiences that matter most to our mission. The organization leads mission and enterprise communications, external affairs, executive communications, public affairs, stakeholder engagement, events, digital channels, and reputation management in support of MITRE's public-interest mission.

CXA embeds domain-fluent communicators with MITRE's mission sectors to shape the narratives, campaigns, content, and stakeholder engagement that advance MITRE's impact.

We're seeking a lead content strategist who can cut through the acronyms and jargon to translate complex scientific and technical subject matter for target audiences across multiple channels. Researching a web article, you'll recognize the video potential it holds, the expert profile to complement it, the animation or infographic it should have been all along.

MITRE's work makes a difference to the federal agencies we support, the populations they serve, and the industries that rely on our expertise.

The successful candidate will combine excellent strategic thinking and planning, exceptional writing and editorial skills, digital platform fluency, and a practical bias for action.

Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Produce science or technical content for digital platforms, including websites, social media, and multimedia channels.
  • Translate complex research findings into compelling, accurate, audience-appropriate content across multiple formats and reading levels.
  • Interview and draw out subject matter experts to capture their individual narratives and describe their discoveries and contributions to the enterprise and mission impact.
  • Apply AI tools and emerging technologies to accelerate product development, improve workflows, and enhance the impact of our digital communications.
  • Define and track practical measures of communications effectiveness, such as message pull-through, stakeholder engagement, executive readiness, content reuse, audience understanding, campaign progress, and risk reduction.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, public affairs, science communication, engineering, technology policy, or a related field.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to produce publication-ready content under tight timelines.
  • Experience translating technical, scientific, engineering, policy, or mission-oriented information into clear and compelling communications for non-technical audiences.
  • Strong AI acumen and the ability to apply AI tools and emerging technologies to accelerate product development, improve workflows, and enhance the impact of communications.
  • Experience managing multiple priorities, stakeholders, and deliverables in a dynamic environment.
  • Working knowledge of employee communications technology, content management, digital signage, intranets, email platforms, collaboration tools, and analytics.
  • This position requires a minimum of 3 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in or with federal agencies, research institutions, advanced technology organizations, national labs, academia, or other mission-driven technical environments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including active listening, emotional intelligence, collaboration, and the ability to build trust across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Domain knowledge or communications experience in applied science and research, engineering, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cyber, space, biotechnology, microelectronics, advanced manufacturing, systems engineering, or other emerging technology areas.
  • Experience supporting technical leaders, scientists, engineers, or senior experts in communicating complex work to government, industry, academic, media, employee, or general audiences.
  • Experience measuring communications outcomes, not just activity or output.
