Job Summary

Responsible for providing technical expertise and overseeing daily laboratory operations within approved budgets to ensure quality, efficiency, compliance, and exceptional patient care. This position supervises the analytical testing of blood and other biological specimens while managing laboratory workflow, quality assurance programs, employee development, equipment maintenance, and operational performance. The role serves as a technical and operational leader, supporting department goals related to quality, service, finance, employee engagement, and regulatory compliance. This position may also perform laboratory testing and serves as a resource for complex technical and operational issues.
Essential Functions

  • Provides leadership and technical oversight for daily laboratory operations, ensuring accuracy, quality, productivity, and regulatory compliance.
  • Performs and supervises analytical testing of blood and other biological specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures and quality standards.
  • Manages workflow, staffing assignments, scheduling, productivity, and operational priorities to ensure efficient laboratory operations.
  • Provides orientation, training, competency assessments, and ongoing development for new employees, students, and laboratory personnel.
  • Leads quality control, quality assurance, proficiency testing, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Manages departmental metrics, quality outcomes, strategic initiatives, budget performance, inventory expenses, and labor productivity.
  • Monitors staff performance and provides coaching, mentoring, and corrective action as needed to support quality and productivity standards.
  • Participates in interviewing, hiring, onboarding, evaluating, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions and termination processes with limited supervision.
  • Ensures compliance with accreditation standards and regulatory requirements including DNV, CLIA, OSHA, CAP, AABB, and other applicable agencies.
  • Assesses staff competencies in accordance with regulatory standards and organizational policies.
  • Reads, evaluates, interprets, and verifies complex test results while serving as a technical resource for laboratory staff and providers.
  • Manages instrument maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and operational readiness.
  • Performs pre-analytical activities including equipment maintenance, function checks, inventory control, specimen handling, biological specimen processing, cleaning, disinfection, and quality control activities.
  • Performs post-analytical activities including result reporting, documentation, communication of critical results, and support of clinical teams.
  • Participates in and leads laboratory and hospital performance improvement initiatives focused on patient satisfaction, employee engagement, teamwork, safety, and operational excellence.
  • Represents the laboratory in multidisciplinary committees, technical meetings, leadership meetings, and organizational initiatives.
  • Assists laboratory leadership with special projects, data collection, operational analysis, and process improvement activities.
  • Maintains compliance with hazardous material handling, personal protective equipment, infection prevention, and workplace safety requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Technical expertise related to laboratory testing, instrumentation, procedures, and processes performed within the assigned laboratory area.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory, accreditation, and compliance standards, including DNV, CLIA, OSHA, CAP, AABB, and related agencies.
  • Ability to independently manage workflow, operations, and priorities while directing staff with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain laboratory equipment, records, quality assessment activities, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to monitor staff productivity and provide effective coaching and performance feedback.
  • Ability to educate, train, mentor, and develop laboratory personnel and students.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret complex laboratory results and provide technical consultation.

Education
  • Bachelor's Degree required.

Field of Study
  • Chemical Science, Biological Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or related laboratory science field from an accredited institution required.
  • Candidates whose degree field does not match the required field of study may qualify through applicable CLIA equivalency requirements.

Work Experience
  • One year of leadership experience required.
  • Five years of clinical laboratory experience required.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
  • Additional licensure or certification requirements may apply depending on the specific laboratory, specialty area, or state of employment.

Additional Information
  • Equivalent laboratory education and experience may be considered in accordance with CLIA regulations for high-complexity testing personnel, including:
  • Completion of at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution with qualifying laboratory science coursework.
  • Completion of an ABHES- or CAAHEP-accredited clinical laboratory training program.
  • Documented laboratory training in each specialty area performing high-complexity testing.
  • Successful completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory training program and qualifying laboratory experience.
  • Individuals who qualified and served as high-complexity testing personnel in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and who have continued to do so without interruption.
  • Additional licensure and certification requirements may apply based on department, specialty area, or state regulations. Due to nomenclature updates, MT (ASCP) and MT (AMT) credentials are now recognized as MLS (ASCP) and MLS (AMT).


Pay Range:

$73,090.71 - $135,948.72
