Miller Johnson is seeking an accomplished Labor & Employment attorney with an established practice to join our Labor & Employment Practice Group and help lead the continued growth of our Detroit office. What You'll Do
As a Member of our Labor & Employment Practice Group, you will:
- Serve as a visible leader in the Detroit office, helping shape team culture, engagement, and growth.
- Partner with Practice Group and Firm leadership to support the strategic expansion of the Detroit market.
- Build and strengthen client relationships across industries while identifying opportunities for cross-office and cross-practice collaboration.
- Participate in firmwide leadership activities, committees, and strategic planning initiatives, as appropriate.
- Advise employers on a broad range of employment matters, including employee relations, discipline and termination decisions, accommodations, leave issues, workplace policies, employment agreements, and compliance obligations.
- Represent employers in state and federal court litigation involving discrimination, retaliation, wage and hour matters, restrictive covenants, contract disputes, and other employment related claims.
- Handle or supervise matters before administrative agencies, including the EEOC, MDCR, DOL, NLRB, MERC, and similar regulatory bodies.
- Counsel employers on traditional labor matters, including collective bargaining, grievance administration, arbitration, contract interpretation, and labor relations strategies, as applicable to the candidate's experience.
- Develop practical, business-focused strategies that help clients navigate complex workplace challenges and mitigate risk.
- While the successful candidate may bring particular strengths in one or more areas of labor and employment law, this role offers the flexibility to build upon those strengths while integrating into the broader capabilities of the Labor & Employment Practice Group.
- Collaborate closely with colleagues across practices to deliver comprehensive legal solutions that address the full scope of clients' needs.
- Mentor and support the professional development of associates, counsel, and summer associates while fostering a culture of learning and collaboration.
- Build and expand your practice through business development efforts and by identifying opportunities to deepen existing client relationships.
- Contribute to the continued growth and success of the Labor & Employment Practice Group and Detroit office.
What You Bring
The successful candidate will bring sound judgment, exceptional client service, and an entrepreneurial approach to practice growth.
Qualifications include:
- Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited law school.
- Admission to the Michigan State Bar or eligibility to waive into Michigan.
- A minimum of 8 to 12 years of Labor & Employment experience.
- An established portable book of business.
- Demonstrated success developing and maintaining strong client relationships.
- Experience counseling employers on employment law matters and/or representing employers in employment litigation, administrative proceedings, and traditional labor matters.
- Strong advocacy, negotiation, and business counseling skills.
- Excellent legal research, writing, analytical, and communication abilities.
- Demonstrated leadership experience and a collaborative approach to practice.
- A commitment to mentoring junior attorneys and contributing to a positive office culture.
- A desire to play a meaningful role in the continued growth of the Detroit office and the Labor & Employment Practice Group.
