Overview

The salary range for this position is $6,759.33 - $7,166.67 per month ($81,112.00 - $86,000 per year) depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.

This position is part of the SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit with KPBS.

Responsibilities

The Morning Anchor reports to the Senior Producer of Audio News and works closely with other members of the news department. This position is responsible for delivering live radio newscasts, writing copy for broadcast, prioritizing stories for air, and covering breaking news as it develops.

The Morning Anchor may also be asked to appear as a guest on KPBS current affairs programs and represent the organization at public events. This position is expected to participate in station fundraising activities, community engagement events, and other related public relations efforts on behalf of KPBS.Work Hours: This shift is scheduled from 5:00am - 1:30pm, Monday - Friday

Anchoring 65%

  • Stays current on local, state and national news and determines when and how to include news developments in newscasts or as updates on other platforms.
  • Selects, writes and rewrites copy for stories so they are accurate, easy to understand with a conversational tone.
  • Writes audio promos and other on-air content.
  • Checks content management systems (i.e. Inception) for spots, wraps and features.
  • Create and re-write scripts for accuracy, timeliness and optimization.
  • Stacks newscasts with an eye towards what San Diego and Imperial Valley residents need to know to be informed and connected.
  • Pre-reads all copy and presents content live on-air in an authoritative and conversational manner that connects with San Diego listeners.
  • Presents live breaking news to KPBS listeners when there is an event that impacts public safety.

Interviewing 30%

  • Conducts live and recorded interviews with reporters and newsmakers.
  • Works with producers to identify and produce kicker stories, with an eye towards stories that include community voices, intrigue listeners and have a positive tone to end the newscast on.
  • Prepares for and conducts recorded interviews that expand on news coverage, are informative and conversational.
  • Pre-reads and edits daily local news scripts for accuracy, timeliness and conversational tone.
  • Record introductions and copy so that KPBS content can be uploaded to NPR One.

Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned 5%

  • Responsible for appropriate record-keeping, correspondence, phone calls, supplies and equipment.
Qualifications Knowledge and Abilities
  • Demonstrated expertise in voice delivery and writing for the ear.
  • Demonstrated experience in broadcast news production, as well as the ability to deliver news within a live network clock structure.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a dynamic news environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to high ethical standards for journalism.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work with individuals at various levels.
  • Ability to coordinate a variety of tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines under stressful conditions.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with public radio programming.
  • Knowledge of current San Diego and regional issues.
  • Knowledge of basic computer office skills.
  • Knowledge of broadcast-related programs (i.e. Inception and Audition).
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural sensitivity.
  • Ability to operate technical tools such as a board, computers, recording machines, and other equipment.

Minimum Education
  • Bachelors degree in journalism or related field or equivalent experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Minimum Experience
  • At least two years of on-air professional radio experience.
  • At least one year of live broadcast anchoring and/or hosting experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a top 25 market or national network.
  • Experience in public radio

  • Candidate must reside in California and live within a commutable distance from SDSU at time of hire.
