Role description:

We are seeking a motivated Civil Engineering Designer to join our Transportation team in Ottawa. This is an exciting opportunity to advance your engineering career while contributing to a diverse range of highway, roadway, and utility infrastructure projects. Working within our Design & Engineering teams, you'll create some of the world's most iconic and ground-breaking structures and spaces that transform the world around us, from making journeys easier to opening public places that bring people together.

This role will primarily support municipal roadway, highway, and transportation infrastructure projects throughout Ontario, with opportunities to contribute to utility and linear infrastructure assignments. As part of our multidisciplinary team, you will support the planning, design, and delivery of impactful projects, gaining hands-on experience and mentorship from senior engineers. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer who is eager to develop technical skills, gain project exposure, and grow within a collaborative team environment. Our team delivers sustainable transportation solutions that improve mobility, connect communities, and support growing cities through innovative engineering and digital design.

Role accountabilities:

As a civil designer, you will contribute to a range of infrastructure projects, with an emphasis on detailed design for municipal and linear infrastructure. Responsibilities include preparing functional, preliminary and detailed designs covering all aspects of civil engineering, from grading and drainage to utility layouts and construction specifications. Your expertise ensures project requirements are translated into accurate and constructible solutions.

You will be expected to coordinate closely with the CAD standards group to maintain drafting and modeling standards across all project deliverables. Collaborating with other design disciplines is essential for effective integration of multidisciplinary inputs, resolving interface issues, and supporting seamless project delivery. This collaborative approach is key to upholding quality and consistency throughout the design process.

Prepare engineering drawings, plans, profiles, cross-sections, and 3D models using Civil 3D, MicroStation, and OpenRoads tools. Assist with quantity calculations, cost estimates, design reports, preparation of contract documents and as-built drawings, among other design aspects. Participate in field investigations, site visits, and data collection activities to support project delivery. Support roadway geometric design, grading, drainage, utility coordination, traffic staging, surface creation, corridor modeling, and quantity calculations under the guidance of senior engineers.

Qualifications & Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree or College diploma in Transportation Planning, Civil Engineering, or Engineering Technology with a focus on Transportation or Municipal;
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in roadway, municipal, or transportation infrastructure design. Relevant co-op, internship, or academic project experience will be considered;
  • Experience with at least one of the following design platforms: AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, or OpenRoads Designer (ORD). Knowledge of multiple platforms is considered an asset;
  • Ability to prepare engineering drawings, 3D models, quantities, and basic design calculations;
  • Prepare and assist in developing designs in accordance with applicable municipal, provincial, and industry standards, including TAC, OTM, MTO Design Supplements, and City of Ottawa standards. Demonstrated resourcefulness in efficiently reviewing and applying these standards in a logical manner;
  • Participate in field investigations, site visits, traffic observations, utility verification, and data collection activities to support project delivery;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong organizational, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities;
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for learning, professional development, participation in transportation infrastructure projects and strong attention to detail
  • Versatility to work both independently and in a group setting in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent time management skills to meet deadlines and ability to perform regular quality control checks of the design.

The salary range for this position is $76,000 - $114,000. The base salary represents Arcadis' hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
