Investment Analyst

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a dynamic and results-driven Investment Analyst to join our Corporate Development team in Calgary, Alberta. In this pivotal role, reporting to the Manager of Investment Analysis, you will play a critical part in advancing TransAlta's strategic growth initiatives and supporting the optimization of our existing generation portfolio.

Your expertise in performing timely, accurate, and comprehensive research and financial analysis will be essential in shaping investment decisions and exploring strategic opportunities, particularly in new-generation development, early-stage projects, and mergers & acquisitions.

This position is based out of our Downtown Calgary Head Office, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

  • Provide financial analysis and other analytical support of growth opportunities, including potential acquisitions and business development projects
  • Ensure all inputs to financial models have been agreed to and signed off by sponsoring project manager
  • Deliver accurate analysis of the corporate impacts of investment decisions
  • Perform ad hoc analysis, including the creation of financial models, analysis of business trends to support the growth of the business, and research to support corporate strategy development
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams-including engineering, trading, operations, and tax-to evaluate assets and identify risks and value drivers
  • Support analysis across multiple business areas, including commercial contracts, growth and development projects, and M&A transactions


ABOUT YOU

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a corporate strategy and or planning/analysis role
  • Degree and/or professional designation in, business, finance, economics, or other applicable degree
  • Previous corporate development or investment banking experience is preferred
  • CFA preferred, or working towards CFA is preferred
  • Expert skills in Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Highly skilled financial background with an understanding of the principles of financial analysis, key financial metrics that generate value, mergers and acquisitions, and financial statement analysis
  • Experience in financial spreadsheet modelling
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at various stages and to prioritize with the assistance of Manager
  • Well-developed understanding of valuation techniques and financial metrics
  • Ability to work independently and produce results within agreed upon deadlines
  • Exemplary communicator with excellent written and oral business communication skills
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships with people at all organizational levels
  • Willing to dedicate time necessary to deliver on tight deadlines
  • Enjoys working on multiple assignments and thrives under pressure
