Help

• Manages a comprehensive industrial hygiene program for NIH covering large, complex biomedical research and industrial operations; or experimental work involving a wide variety of new chemical and biological agents.
• Directs or performs a variety of functions, such as developing instructions and control procedures covering complex potential health hazards.
• Provides expert advice and consultation to management officials on industrial hygiene matters, justifying operating budgets and requirements for staff, facilities, and equipment.
• Directs a training program in industrial hygiene; assuring program integration with other departments of the activity, with higher organizational echelons, and with other Federal, State, and local agencies and health officials.
• Conducts complex studies, including those where new or exotic materials are involved in the industrial process.
• Plans, conducts, or directs special studies concerned with occupational health problems which require the development or modification of air sampling equipment or protective devices, or the evaluation of control measures for a specific operation.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for an Industrial Hygienist, GS-0690 position, you must have:

A. Completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate/higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science;

OR

B. Completed a bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene;

OR

C. Obtained a Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

Additionally:

You qualify at the GS-11 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements:

A. Completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or an LL.M., if related;

OR

B. You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: 1) Evaluating occupational health hazards found in operations where industrial processes are of a conventional nature and literature on the hazards is readily available; 2) Performing analysis using standard methods to determine nature and degree of toxic material present in a variety of materials; 3) Conducting surveys to identify and evaluate health hazards and potential health hazards; 4) Compiling toxicological data for technical reports;

OR

C. A combination of post-baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

You qualify at the GS-12 level, if you meet the following qualification requirement:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: 1) Planning and conducting complete evaluations of work operations involving potentially hazardous environmental conditions, analyzing findings, and recommending corrective measures and controls; 2) Providing consultation and basic technical advice to program staff on occupational health and safety programs and issues; 3) Planning and conducting studies and surveys analyzing hygiene and safety issues involved in the industrial process; 4) Investigating health problems which arise among workers.

You qualify at the GS-13 level, if you meet the following qualification requirement:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: 1) Planning and administering an industrial hygiene program for an organization including analyzing and interpreting regulations and policies to determine their applicability to an organization's programs; 2) Developing and implementing methods to eliminate or control hazardous and environmental conditions in a work environment; 3) Providing training and technical advice to program staff on occupational health and safety programs and issues; 4) Evaluating proposed new work processes or materials to assure incorporation of adequate measures for prevention of occupational disease hazards; 5) Preparing technical reports based on toxicological data.
