Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Systems Engineer to join our Integrated Flight and Propulsion Control System (IFPCS) team at our Santa Cruz, CA facility. The Systems Engineer will report to the System Team Lead and will play a key role in advancing development of the flight and propulsion control system for the JAS4-1 eVTOL aircraft.

The Integrated Flight and Propulsion Control System has responsibility for the aircraft primary flight control functions including pilot inceptors, flight sensors, data processing and communications, control laws, control surface and propulsion effectors, vehicle navigation, and air data sensors as well as some vehicle management functions, which are all combined to effect stability, guidance and control of the aircraft.  The program is currently in the late Detailed Design Phase, with a principal focus on system integration, design validation, and verification activities.

This is a full-time onsite role in our Santa Cruz headquarters

Responsibilities
  • Authoring, conducting engineering reviews and validation analyses, and validating system, subsystem, and equipment level requirements
  • Support design teams in trade studies, interface definition, requirements flow-down, development analyses, modeling and simulation activities, and assessment of results
  • Creating, managing and tracking to closure design issues, technical risks, problem reports, and opportunities for system
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams such as Software, Electrical Engineering, System Test, Flight Test and Certification
  • Preparing artifacts and briefing material for internal and external technical meetings design reviews, program reviews, and safety-of-flight reports for the aircraft development flights
  • Assists in creating Type Certification test plans, test reports, design reports and performance analysis for the Regulatory Authorities
Required
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics required; Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering preferred
  • 5 years of Aerospace industry experience in primary flight and propulsion control
  • Understanding and application of disciplined systems engineering processes
  • Familiarity with requirements management
  • Familiarity with safety assessment concepts
  • Excellent verbal and technical writing skills in English language
  • Ability to work collaboratively, with self-starter skills that enables self-sufficiency
Desired
  • Experience with fly-by-wire and network architecture, design and requirements
  • Experience integrating and testing complex, highly integrated flight control systems
  • Experience with development assurance processes per SAE ARP4754A
  • Experience with requirements management tools (working knowledge of Siemens Polarion is a plus)
  • Experience with Atlassian tools including Jira, Confluence, and Crucible
  • Familiarity with safety assessment process, methods, and analyses (FHA, FMEA/FMECA, FTA, CCA) used in safety assessments (PSSA, SSA) per SAE ARP4761
  • Familiarity with FAA Part 23, Part 25, Part 27, and/or Part 29 Certification Regulations (Part 23 is highly desired)
Additional Information

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $126,700 - $153,700. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
