Responsibilities

Job Description | HVAC Field Engineer

Overview
• The HVAC Field Engineer reports to the Director of Facility Operations and is responsible for supervising facility maintenance projects and daily operations for facility maintenance projects at all SOFIE facilities. Projects include primarily HVAC and overseeing preventative maintenance, but may also include oversight of construction, roofing, painting, carpentry, masonry, flooring, door access, and other building related projects. The position develops scope, verifies budget, obtains bids, provides recommendations, manages contractors, tracks and reports progress, and delivers outcomes with expected results. Projects may also be completed internally by the HVAC Field Engineer and/or other Facilities staff. Duties may also include building inspections, completing maintenance punch lists, responding to emergencies, prioritizing critical projects, completing preventative maintenance, supervising preventive maintenance contractors, supervising other maintenance staff, and maintaining the Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS) for the Facilities Department.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, install, commission, and maintain HVAC and environmental control systems tailored to radiopharmaceutical production facilities, with a focus on cleanroom and controlled environment requirements.
• Manage and liaise with local/National HVAC contractors to ensure timely repairs and all preventative maintenance (PM) is conducted on time and per SOFIE PM agreements
• Manage PM contracts with HVAC contractors to ensure all equipment and desired maintenance terms are current per SOFIE requirements
• Document and manage all HVAC related work orders and preventative maintenance in the designated CMMS system
• Maintain all HVAC related equipment in the designated CMMS system and triage incoming SOFIE
• Monitor and manage airflow rates, temperature, humidity, pressurization, and filtration to maintain ISO-class cleanroom conditions.
• Perform regular preventive maintenance, troubleshoot HVAC issues, and initiate corrective actions to ensure continuous and reliable operation.
• Coordinate with cross-functional teams-including Facilities, Quality Assurance, and Compliance-to ensure HVAC systems meet safety standards and cGMP regulations.
• Support HVAC validation and qualification efforts (e.g., IQ/OQ/PQ protocols).
• Conduct system assessments and recommend improvements for efficiency, reliability, and energy savings.
• Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, FDA, and OSHA regulations, and health and safety standards.
• Provide technical support during facility expansion projects, upgrades, or new equipment installations.
• Open to 50% travel to other facilities
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
• Proven commercial or industrial HVAC experience required
• A.A.S HVAC from accredited college preferred
• Certifications including Universal EPA 608, NATE or RSES
• Journeyman license or similar
• Familiar with controls systems, plenums, effluent exhaust, and HEPA filtration
• Bachelor's degree or HVAC certification preferred
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
• CAD experience strongly preferred
• 5+ years of HVAC engineering and/or technical experience, preferably in pharmaceutical, biotech, or cleanroom environments.
• 5+ years of project management experience
• Strong knowledge of HVAC systems for critical environments-including HEPA filtration, cleanroom pressurization, and temperature/humidity control.
• Experience with HVAC validation procedures and regulatory compliance
• Proficiency in HVAC design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit) and familiarity with building management systems (BMS). (preferred)
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with meticulous attention to documentation and quality.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively across engineering, QA, and facility teams.
