The Barnard College Department of Chemistry seeks an innovative individual whose research contributes to understanding and curing cancer to serve as the inaugural Herbert and Florence Irving Professor of Biology or Biophysics and Professor of Chemistry. This will be an open rank search. Special consideration for this endowed position will be given to candidates working in the field of chemical biology. Applicants must have a PhD degree in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical biology, or a related discipline, a dedication to undergraduate education both in the classroom and laboratory, and a research program that furthers the understanding and treatment of cancer. Postdoctoral experience is strongly preferred. Responsibilities include teaching in the biochemistry or organic chemistry course sequences, with special consideration given to those who can teach in both.

Job Description:

The Barnard College Department of Chemistry seeks an innovative individual whose research contributes to understanding and curing cancer to serve as the inaugural Herbert and Florence Irving Professor of Biology or Biophysics, and Professor of Chemistry. This will be an open rank search, and we are prepared to appoint at the assistant, associate, or full professor rank. Special consideration for this endowed position will be given to candidates working in the field of chemical biology. The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) and/or the Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics (IICD) at Columbia University. 

The Barnard Chemistry department currently consists of eight tenure-line faculty, three lecturers, a core facilities and laboratory instrument manager, a senior associate laboratory director, and three lab instructional specialists. Barnard faculty are expected to engage in research as well as undergraduate curriculum development, teaching, advising, and research mentoring. The standard teaching load for a tenure-line faculty member is two courses per semester. This may include advanced electives as well as introductory courses. For this position, special consideration will be given to applicants who can teach in the biochemistry and organic chemistry course sequences. 

Barnard College is located in the vibrant Morningside Heights neighborhood, adjacent to Columbia University’s main campus, and approximately 2.5 miles south of Columbia’s medical campus. In late 2026, all of the physical and life sciences departments will move into the newly renovated Roy and Diana Vagelos Science Center, where the person in this position will have a 740-square-foot lab with adjoining office, and access to ample shared resources and equipment on the Barnard campus. Barnard’s status as a highly selective liberal arts college affiliated with a major research university uniquely enables its faculty to innovate in both research and pedagogy.
