SUMMARY:

The Head of Kiln and Packaging is responsible for leading and managing the operational functions within the department. The Head of Kiln and Packaging ensures that products are safely and sustainably manufactured according to required schedule, quality standards, and cost objectives. This role is essential to achieving Operational Excellence by applying Lean Manufacturing principles, implementing Lean 6S strategies, and optimizing process efficiency.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote a culture of safety within the Kiln and Packaging department and champion the York Safety Transformation by leading through Visible Felt Leadership, setting a positive example, and actively engaging with employees during their tasks.
  • Lead and actively participate in the safety improvements to ensure safe working practices.
  • Promote and actively participate in the safety process to ensure safe working practices within the plant, aimed at targeting hazard recognition and injury prevention.
  • Ensure employee adherence to all safety rules, identifying and driving safety-related improvements within the department.
  • Ensure consistent product quality and adherence to established quality standards.
  • Responsible for achieving goals of the department, according to established procedures and approved processes, supervising all employees and manufacturing functions within the department.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate departmental activities to fulfill production orders, meet inventory requirements, and deliver manufactured products in a timely manner, according to established procedures and approved processes.
  • Identify, recommend, and implement operational improvements to reduce costs, improve process productivity, and minimize waste.
  • Develop and improve upon existing standard work procedures, prepare work schedules, and expedite workflow.
  • Develop annual operating budget for the departments based upon production plans.
  • Collaborate with other departments to coordinate cross-functional processes such as maintenance, production, inventory management, quality assurance and customer service.
  • Utilize the management of change system to meet established goals and objectives and drive continuous improvement within each of the departments.
  • Drive a high performing team culture by evaluating staffing needs to determine necessary hiring, training, developmental, and disciplinary needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience is required.
  • OSHA Training preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of manufacturing methods, techniques, and related equipment.
  • Familiarity and working knowledge of Lean/6S practices, with demonstrated history of successful implementation.
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks and priorities and easily adapt to changing situations.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft applications and ERP systems.
  • Strong leadership skills, with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Highly organized and self-motivated; ability to work independently.

  • Perform all work in accordance with RHI Magnesita's Health and Safety policies.
  • Adhere to all EHS and IMS policies and job expectations as specified in the Job Descriptions of the Persons Responsible for IMS, RHI Magnesita NAM Regional Safety Rules, Roles, Responsibilities, and Authorities, and Safety Rules and Responsibilities documents.
  • The work is performed outdoors and/or indoors, enduring heat, cold, rain, dust, wind, and other elements.
  • Capable of operating various types of office equipment including but not limited to computers, phones, copiers, and scanners.


PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES:
  • Physical demands include but are not limited to standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, climbing, and lifting - 50 pounds maximum.
  • Must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment (including hard hat, safety glasses, safety shoes, and gloves).
