THE POSITION
As a Hazardous Waste Program Specialist with the Department of Environmental Protection, you will support key environmental programs that shape public health and safety. This position will involve working with experts across the agency while applying your knowledge of hazardous waste regulations. You will help coordinate statewide cleanup and financial assurance activities that make a difference every day. This role provides a strong path for growth in a technical and impactful program area.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position supports statewide hazardous waste cleanup and financial assurance programs by coordinating activities, reviewing submissions, and preparing program reports. You will also provide technical support to regional staff and help maintain consistent program operations. As a Hazardous Waste Program Specialist, you will perform the following duties:
  • Program Coordination: Support cleanup and financial assurance programs by reviewing activities and maintaining communication with other agencies
  • Technical Review: Evaluate filings, contractor work, and program documents for accuracy and completeness
  • Report Preparation: Prepare progress reports and written materials for internal and external partners
  • Stakeholder Support: Assist staff, regulated entities, and the public with questions on hazardous waste requirements
  • Training Assistance: Help coordinate training sessions that explain regulatory updates and program expectations
  • Policy Support: Participate in drafting guidance, reviewing regulations, and providing input on proposed changes

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Two years of experience as a Solid Waste Specialist (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which affords the applicant the required knowledges and abilities.

Special Requirements:
  • This position requires possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Other Requirements:
  • You must possess and maintain a REAL ID or passport for this position. Proof of possession will be needed at the time of a conditional offer of employment.
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
