Overview
The General Manager, Retail owns the performance of a HomeBuilt store, including sales, profitability, team development, and the customer experience. This role sets the standard for how the store runs day to day, builds a capable leadership bench, and makes the operating and staffing decisions that keep the business healthy. The General Manager represents the store in the community and builds lasting relationships with contractors, business customers, and local partners.
Job Responsibilities- Own store financial performance, including sales growth, margin, expense control, and profitability
- Build and execute the store business plan, adjusting course when results fall short of plan
- Manage labor, inventory investment, and operating expenses within approved budgets
- Set and enforce service standards so customers receive consistent, knowledgeable help throughout the store
- Engage directly with customers to gather feedback, resolve escalated concerns, and identify improvement opportunities
- Lead hiring, onboarding, performance management, and succession planning for the store team
- Coach store managers and supervisors, and prepare team members for advancement
- Make final decisions on hiring, employment actions, staffing levels, and resource allocation within company guidelines
- Oversee merchandising, inventory accuracy, shrink control, store condition, and product availability
- Ensure compliance with company policy, safety requirements, and applicable regulations
- Represent the store in the community and build relationships with contractors, builders, and business customers
- Create a work environment where employees are engaged, accountable, and want to stay
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Strong financial acumen, including profit and loss ownership, budgeting, and margin management
- Ability to read operating results, identify the cause of a gap, and act quickly
- Skilled at coaching and developing leaders, including managing performance directly and fairly
- Sound judgment in staffing, scheduling, and resource decisions under changing demand
- Knowledge of retail operations, merchandising, inventory control, and loss prevention practices
- Working knowledge of building materials, hardware, and home improvement products and the customers who buy them

- Ability to build credibility with contractors, vendors, and community partners
- Understanding of employment practices, safety requirements, and store level compliance obligations
Education and Certificates- High school diploma or GED required, bachelor's degree in business, management, retail management, finance, operations, or a related field preferred
- 8 to 10 years of retail, hardware, home improvement, construction supply, or related experience required
- 5 years of progressive leadership experience required, including leading through other managers
- Prior Store Manager, General Manager, or equivalent leadership experience preferred
- Profit and loss responsibility for a business exceeding $5M in annual revenue preferred
Physical Requirements- Frequent standing and walking throughout the store, yard, and receiving areas
- Occasional bending, reaching, kneeling, and climbing ladders or stairs
- Occasional lifting up to approximately 50 lbs, with assistance for heavier material
- Exposure to varying indoor and outdoor conditions, including a lumber yard and equipment traffic
- Occasional travel to other store locations, vendor sites, and community or industry events
