Annual Pay Rate: $146,280.00 - $210,000.00

Civil Service: No

Shift Hours: Sunday - Saturday 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM (4x10 schedule. Actual days TBD. Subject to change).

Education, Experience, and Skill Requirements

  • DVM from accredited School of Veterinary Medicine AND a valid license to practice veterinary medicine issued by the Texas Veterinary Medical Board.
  • More than five years of directly related experience as a veterinarian is required.
  • Ability to complete at least 25-30 spay/neuter surgeries each day in a timely manner.
  • Has the ability, knowledge and dire to perform other surgeries including but not limited to amputations, mass removal, soft tissue damage and eye surgeries.
  • Experience in shelter medicine is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of current veterinary standards and practices.
  • Knowledge of contagious diseases and isolation protocol.
  • Compassion for animals, comfortable working in a shelter environment and willing to accommodate animals in the workplace.
  • Understanding of animal behavior and use of positive reinforcement techniques to interact with animals.
  • Chameleon database knowledge is desired.
  • Ability to handle a fast-paced, stressful shelter environment with tact and diplomacy.
  • Customer service experience with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to comfortably perform in public facing environment.
  • Must be able to work overtime and/or weekend as needed.
  • Ability to work offsite events, night and/or out of state, if needed.
  • Maintains appropriate licensing and completes required continuing education courses.

Primary Job Duties:

  • Provides strategic leadership for the Medical Services Division, ensuring alignment with Montgomery County Animal Services' mission, goals, and organizational priorities.
  • Oversees all medical operations, including preventive care, diagnostics, treatment, surgery, disease control, emergency response, and humane euthanasia, ensuring the highest standards of veterinary medicine and animal welfare.
  • Provides direct leadership, supervision, scheduling, coaching, and performance management for staff veterinarians, and provides leadership, coaching, and performance management for Veterinary Technicians in collaboration with the Veterinary Technician Supervisor, fostering a collaboration, accountable, and high-performing team.
  • Serves as the medical authority for the department by establishing clinical expectations, promoting evidence-based medicine, and ensuring consistency in medical decision-making among veterinarians and medical staff.
  • Directs medical decision-making for animals entering the adoption program, animals requiring specialized treatment, and animals requiring humane euthanasia in accordance with state law, accepted veterinary standards, and MCAS policies.
  • Establishes, implements, and continuously evaluates medical protocols related to preventive medicine, surgery, treatment, sanitation, biosecurity, controlled substances, and euthanasia to ensure compliance with applicable laws, professional standards, and best practices.
  • Serves as the lead veterinarian for animal cruelty and neglect investigations by conducting medical and forensic examinations, documenting findings, providing veterinary consultation to Animal Services and law enforcement, coordinating specialized diagnostic services as needed, and serving as an expert witness in administrative or judicial proceedings when requested.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, county, DEA, and veterinary licensing requirements related to veterinary practice, pharmaceuticals, controlled substances, medical records, and animal welfare regulations.
  • Oversees inventory management, purchasing, and fiscal stewardship of pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, surgical supplies, and other departmental resources, while assisting the Veterinary Technician Supervisor in identifying, order, and maintaining the medical supplies necessary to support daily operations.
  • Provides on-call veterinary leadership for emergency medical situations and ensures timely response to critical animal welfare concerns.
  • Collaborates with executive leadership to develop departmental goals, budgets, performance metrics, and strategic initiatives that improve lifesaving outcomes, operational efficiency, and quality of care.
  • Collaborates with executive leadership, shelter managers, and staff across all divisions to support organizational goals, improve operational efficiency, develop solutions to complex animal welfare challenges, and promote effective communication and teamwork throughout the organization.
  • Provides medical guidance, education, and training to veterinarians, Veterinary Technicians, Animal Services Officers, shelter staff, volunteers, and community partners, as appropriate, to promote best practices in animal health, disease prevention, animal handling, and animal welfare.
  • Monitors medical outcomes, analyzes performance data, and implements quality improvement initiatives to continuously enhance patient care, operational efficiency, and departmental performance.
  • Represents Montgomery County Animal Services in interactions with the community partners, regulatory agencies, professional organizations, rescue partners, and the public.
  • Contributes to the development of organizational policies, procedures, long-range planning, and strategic initiatives that support the overall success of the department and Montgomery County Animal Services.
