Job Summary

Oversee the operation of a designated area responsible for conducting inspections, repairs, maintenance, and modifications for cars and locomotives within operating divisions. Manage a team of 50 to 75 mechanics, laborers, cleaners, technicians, and supervisors, ensuring efficient use of personnel, timely completion of work, quality assurance, and adherence to budgetary constraints. Manage diverse mechanical efforts, including local commuter, regional, and state projects, involving contractors and multiple sites while maintaining consistent operational parameters.

This position is a tiered position. Incumbents will have a position level assigned based on their skills and experience, and in alignment with position development plans. Position placement is at Amtrak's sole and absolute discretion.

Essential Functions

  • Manage equipment inspection, maintenance, and repair programs to enhance equipment availability and reliability.
  • Assume primary leadership responsibility for the shift or facility, ensuring effective communication of mechanical, safety, and material issues.
  • Utilize the Safety Management System to identify and mitigate behavioral, infrastructural, and procedural risks.
  • Oversee rolling stock equipment maintenance, complying with Amtrak and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate and execute work orders for assigned equipment, including planned corrective and preventive maintenance, while ensuring proper documentation in WMS.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree Associate's Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
  • Plus 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working on machinery in an industrial, marine, railroad, or plant environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership/management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in diagnosing and troubleshooting electrical and/or mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience related to safety program methodology and its application.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
  • Plus 8 years of relevant work experience.
  • Certified in high speed rail - tier II and tier III


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated leadership, decision-making, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication, enabling effective presentations.
  • Knowledge of industry quality standards and ISO procedures.
  • Familiarity with mechanical crafts and labor contracts.
  • Capacity to identify and implement change initiatives addressing persistent issues.
  • Strong analytical abilities.
  • Proficient in PC skills, including Microsoft Suite and Asset Management programs.
  • Ability to assume sole managerial responsibilities as needed


Environmental Conditions/Physical Demands

The salary for General Foreman I is $110,000 and the salary for General Foreman II is $122,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
