Job Description:
Location: San Francisco/Hybrid
Department: Structural & Mechanical Engineering
Employment Type: Contractor full-time, convertible to salaried full-time.

Scope & Ownership
Owns the start system: the high-pressure air reservoir and blowdown system, the starter turbine (air-driven expansion/impulse turbine), and the starter power coupling to the rotor. Crossover: turbomachinery12mechanical systems12controls.

Minimum Education
 Bachelor27s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
 Master27s or PhD preferred

Experience
 6-8 years in turbomachinery / turbine, turbo-expander or turbopump design, or a turbomachinery PhD plus ~3 years
 Small-turbine aerodynamic and mechanical design; pressure systems; couplings/clutches

Skill Requirements
 Turbine aerodynamic and mechanical design
 Blowdown and pressure-vessel systems; couplings and engagement mechanisms
 Transient (start) modeling; CFD/FEA; 2D/3D CAD

Responsibilities
 Take sole ownership of hardware development from clean-sheet through high rate production across multiple components of the Parallax PE-10
 Collaborate with other REs to define interface requirements and manage coupled interactions
 Collaborate with Analysts to derive loads, environments, and response characteristics of your hardware across its operating envelope
 Develop and execute test and qualification plans for your hardware
 Analyze test and qualification data to derive margins and iterate on designs
 Collaborate with Production to develop and execute prototype, low rate, and full rate production of your hardware while balancing performance, cost, and complexity
 Flex across multiple disciplines and scopes as necessary
