POSITION SUMMARYWe are seeking a Frontend Engineer to join our team supporting VA.gov Platform. In this role you will design, develop, and maintain the shared front-end platform that powers VA.gov. This role builds and supports the React-based application framework, shared libraries, CI/CD pipelines, testing infrastructure, and deployment systems that enable dozens of Veteran-Facing Services (VFS) teams to deliver secure, accessible, and high-performing digital services to millions of Veterans.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about working closely with Backend Engineers, Product Managers, Design System engineers, and Platform teams. The Frontend Engineer develops reusable platform capabilities, modernizes the front-end architecture, improves developer experience, and ensures the VA.gov front-end ecosystem remains buildable, testable, deployable, secure, and performant while meeting accessibility, security, and federal compliance requirements.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Build reusable front-end components, utilities, libraries, and tooling that improve consistency and developer productivity across engineering teams
- Improve front-end architecture through application isolation, code splitting, dependency management, and performance optimization
- Lead framework and runtime modernization initiatives (Node.js LTS upgrades, build tooling modernization, test framework migrations, and removal of legacy technologies)
- Write technical design documents, discovery documents, RFCs, and implementation proposals; participate in architecture reviews
- Build and maintain GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines supporting build, test, and deployment of front-end applications
- Develop deployment automation including isolated application deployments, staged continuous deployment, version tagging, rollback procedures, and release management
- Improve pipeline security through least-privilege permissions, OIDC authentication, dependency validation, and GitHub security best practices
- Develop deployment observability including dashboards, metrics, Slack notifications, logging, and reporting
- Monitor, triage, and remediate dependency vulnerabilities using GitHub Advanced Security, Dependabot, and other security tooling
- Respond to software supply chain security incidents including emergency dependency remediation and credential rotation
- Support Authority to Operate (ATO) activities including SBOM generation, security documentation, and audit support
- Optimize front-end performance through code splitting, lazy loading, asset optimization, caching, and bundle analysis
- Develop accessible user interfaces that comply with WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 standards using the VA Design System
- Ensure compatibility across supported browsers, devices, and assistive technologies
- Support Veteran-Facing Services teams by troubleshooting CI/CD issues, reviewing platform-impacting changes, and participating in Engineering Collaboration Cycle support
- Create and maintain platform documentation, migration guides, deployment documentation, and engineering best practices
- Communicate platform changes and coordinate adoption across dozens of engineering teams
- Develop internal tooling, dashboards, Slack integrations, and automation that improve platform operations and developer experience
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, cross-functional Platform initiatives, and Front-End Communities of Practice while mentoring other engineers
QUALIFICATIONS- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance
- Bachelor's Degree
- 5 years' experience as a Frontend Engineer
- Strong experience developing applications using React, modern JavaScript (ES6+), and TypeScript
- Experience designing reusable front-end architectures, component libraries, and shared application frameworks
- Strong experience with GitHub Actions or comparable CI/CD systems, including workflow authoring and pipeline troubleshooting
- Experience with automated testing at scale using Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress, Playwright, Mocha, or similar frameworks
- Experience with Node.js, npm/yarn, Webpack, Vite, or comparable front-end build systems
- Experience with Git and GitHub workflows in large, collaborative repositories
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or similar technologies
- Experience remediating dependency vulnerabilities and responding to security findings
- Experience writing shell scripts or automation supporting development and deployment workflows
- Strong understanding of responsive design, web performance optimization, accessibility, and modern browser API
WORKING CONDITIONSStandard Business hours are Monday through Friday. Occasional extended or weekend hours may be required based on operational needs. Must have reliable internet service that allows for effective telecommuting.
PAY RANGEThe base salary range for this position is $105,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on geographic work location, relevant experience, skills, education, internal equity, security clearance, and contract requirements. Geographic salary ranges are determined in accordance with the company's compensation practices and represent a good-faith estimate of the compensation for this position at the time of posting.
