[email protected] Job SummaryThe Department of Public Works is seeking a knowledgeable and results-driven Fleet Supervisor to lead the daily operations of a diverse fleet that keeps essential public services moving. This position oversees fleet maintenance, equipment readiness, and operational performance, ensuring that vehicles and heavy equipment are safe, reliable, and available to support County operations.The Fleet Supervisor provides leadership to maintenance staff, coordinates preventative maintenance and repair programs, analyzes fleet performance data, and implements strategies that improve efficiency, reduce downtime, and maximize the lifespan of fleet assets. This role works collaboratively with internal departments, vendors, and leadership to ensure regulatory compliance, maintain accurate maintenance records, manage budgets and inventory, and support long-term fleet planning.The ideal candidate is a proactive leader with strong technical knowledge, sound decision-making skills, and a commitment to safety, customer service, and continuous improvement. Success in this role requires the ability to balance daily operational demands with strategic planning while fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, and excellence.Hiring Range: $83,500.00 - $90,000.00 annually
This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday, 6:30am - 5:00pm; subject to change. Please be advised this position may close without advance notice, should we receive a sufficient number of qualified applications.
Plans, organizes, and supervises the maintenance and repair of all County vehicles and equipment. Prioritizes repairs based on the criticality of vehicle or equipment. Ensures vehicles and equipment are inspected and maintained in accordance with the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Regulations (FMCSR), manufacturer standards, and the Fleet Management Section Operating Procedures (FMSOP). Employment is subject to the terms, conditions, and policies detailed in the Personnel Policies Manual (PPM). This position requires regular in-person presence as an essential job function.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities - Provides direct supervision of maintenance personnel; trains, mentors, and employees; assigns training as appropriate. Completes performance evaluations and motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance; participates in the hiring and disciplinary process.
- Develops and maintains preventive maintenance schedules and repair procedures and standards to ensure compliance with all appropriate regulations.
- Conducts quality control inspections to ensure vehicles and equipment are safe for use.
- Assists in the development and implementation of strategic planning, goals, goal measurement, objectives, and priorities of assigned operations.
- Ensures all maintenance is performed as outlined in the Fleet Management Section Operating Procedures (FMSOP). Ensures all personnel activities are performed as outlined in the El Paso County Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual.
- Implements procedures and enforces standards for maintenance and repair operations and personnel, shop, and equipment safety. Recommends and implements improved policies and procedures.
- Performs maintenance management using current information systems to gather data, cost and fault analysis, and tracking maintenance trends.
- Consistently provides a high level of customer service to internal and external customers. Coordinates services and activities with other County departments, divisions, and vendors.
- Responsible for the security of the Fleet Management maintenance facilities, shop tools, repair parts, assigned vehicles, and computers.
- Ensures all repairs, maintenance, and services are accurately documented.
- Executes weekly Environmental Management System (EMS) garage checks and recommends and/or implements corrective actions.
- Schedules for on-call after-hours to respond to emergencies; assigns after-hours on-call duties in the event of an emergency.
- Performs other duties as required.
Supervision Exercised: This classification requires supervising and monitoring performance for a regular group of employees or unit(s) including providing input on hiring/disciplinary action and work objectives/ effectiveness, performance evaluations, and realigning work as needed. A first-line or second-line supervisor typically performs these tasks.
Supervision Received: Receives administrative supervision. This classification typically performs job duties and resolves conflict according to their own judgment and initiatives, requesting supervisory assistance only when necessary. Special projects are managed with little oversight, and assignments may be reviewed upon completion. Performance reviewed periodically.
Qualifications Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Must be technically proficient in the diagnosis, troubleshooting, repair, and safety inspection of light, medium and heavy vehicles, construction equipment, attachments, and auxiliary equipment. Ability to conduct fault analysis and identify and recommend solutions to prevent future faults.
- Knowledge of Federal environmental regulations and Federal Motor Carriers Safety Regulations (FMCSR).
- Knowledge of Fleet Management Section Operating Procedures (FMSOP).
- Ability to supervise, objectively review, and mentor assigned staff.
- Ability to estimate and prioritize repairs, manage multiple tasks, and be adaptable in a constantly changing environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers, County staff, and vendors. Ability to provide excellent customer service.
- Ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment including telephone, computer, printer, copier, and calculator. Ability to use databases and Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Required Education & Experience- High school diploma or equivalent education.
- Eight years of vehicle (light, medium, heavy) and equipment maintenance and repair experience.
Preferred Education & Experience- Two years of supervisory or leadership experience.
Licenses/Certificates- Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Class A Commercial Driver's License.
- ASE Certification (Automotive and/or Medium/Heavy Truck) required.
- Must obtain and maintain necessary certifications and licenses as applicable to the position.
Pre-Employment Requirements- Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, and physical examination.
Work Conditions Duties are primarily performed in an office, garage, and outdoor environment. Duties may require lifting, bending, and climbing. May be required to work with hazardous materials, such as antifreeze, lubricants, solvents, corrosives, fuels, and vapors. Duties may be performed in hazardous situations, including moving vehicles/equipment, or recovering vehicles/equipment in adverse weather conditions. Works with potentially dangerous equipment and tools. Must be able to safely lift and carry up to seventy-five pounds. Subject to emergency off hours call out. Subject to drug and alcohol testing.
