What is a Fleet Procurement & Technical Specialist?

The Fleet Procurement & Technical Specialist is responsible for leading the acquisition, lifecycle management, and technical oversight of the organization’s fleet assets.  This role ensures cost-efficient procurement, compliance with regulatory standards, and optimal fleet performance through strategic sourcing, vendor management and technical expertise.

What does a Fleet Procurement & Technical Specialist do?

  • Responsible for annual budgeting and capital planning processes

  • Develops and implements procurement strategies for vehicles, equipment, and related services

  • Conducts market analysis to identify cost-saving opportunities and emerging technologies

  • Negotiates contracts, pricing, and terms with manufacturers, dealers, and suppliers

  • Manages vehicle ordering, upfitting, and delivery schedules

  • Reviews and approves quotations, purchase orders, and invoices to ensure compliance with internal policies

  • Evaluates vehicle specifications, performance standards, and compliance with safety and environmental regulations

  • Provides technical guidance on vehicle selection, maintenance programs, and lifecycle planning

  • Oversees integration of telematics, electric vehicle technology, and sustainability initiatives

  • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with suppliers and service providers

  • Monitors vendor performance and ensure adherence to contractual obligations

  • Prepares cost analyses, procurement forecasts, and fleet replacement schedules

  • Tracks and works to establish KPIs such as total cost of ownership, downtime, and fuel efficiency

  • Assists in the oversight of the operation and utilization of telematics and fleet management systems to monitor performance, fuel efficiency, driver behavior and maintenance needs

  • Ensures telematics data is accurately captured, analyzed and reported to support data driven decision-making

  • Assists in the overall leadership and execution of departmental goals, initiatives, and day-to-day tasks to ensure operational excellence

  • Fosters a culture of accountability, safety and teamwork across all levels of the Transportation organization

  • Provides support for storm restoration efforts

What does it take to be a Fleet Procurement & Technical Specialist?

Required:

  • Associates Degree in Automotive, Business, Engineering or a related field and 3+ years of relevant experience in fleet procurement, purchasing, or a closely related domain. In lieu of a degree, High School Diploma or equivalent and 5+ years of relevant experience in fleet procurement, purchasing, or closely related domain

  • Computer skills and the ability to learn new computer software programs quickly

  • Strong time management and organizational skills

  • Excellent interpersonal verbal and written communication skills and the ability to satisfy customer requests effectively and efficiently

  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred:

  • Proficiency with fleet management software
