FLEET MANAGER

Hiring Range: $73,555.16 - $93,782.83 annually DOQ Status: Full-time, Exempt

GENERAL PURPOSE

Supervises and directs a variety of complex and skilled duties related to the maintenance, repair, replacement, and management of the City's fleet of vehicles, heavy equipment, and related equipment. Supervises fleet personnel, contractors, and vendors while coordinating daily activities by determining manpower, equipment, and material needs for specific jobs, providing instruction and guidance, and inspecting completed work. This is a hands-on working manager role that requires active participation in day-to-day fleet maintenance and repair activities as needed.

Senior Van Driver

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Meet performance standards established with the employee's manager.
  • Job attendance is required, except for authorized leave.
  • Supervise the maintenance and repair of City vehicles and heavy equipment; assign workloads; train and evaluate employees.
  • Perform and oversee complex maintenance and repair work on gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, brakes, steering, suspension, hydraulics, cooling systems, HVAC, electrical systems, and computerized vehicle controls.
  • Develop and implement a preventive maintenance program.
  • Assist with preparation and administration of the fleet operating and replacement budgets.
  • Monitor parts inventory, service contracts, and purchase fuel, oil, parts, tools, and maintenance supplies.
  • Develop specifications for vehicles, equipment, and contract services; review bids for compliance.
  • Evaluate and manage the replacement cycle of City vehicles and equipment.
  • Manage vehicle insurance records, titles, registrations, licensing, and regulatory compliance.
  • Track fuel usage and maintain the City's fuel management system.
  • Supervise fleet personnel, including hiring recommendations, performance evaluations, training, discipline, and employee development.
  • Assist City departments with vehicle selection, equipment needs, and fleet-related budgeting.
  • Maintain fleet records using the City's fleet management software.
  • Coordinate repairs with outside vendors and monitor warranty work.
  • Respond to 24-hour emergency callouts as required.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, and other applicable safety regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent; plus, five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in fleet maintenance and repair, including at least three (3) years as a journey-level mechanic and two (2) years in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Special Qualifications:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Utah Commercial Driver's License, Class B with a tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within three (3) months. This position will be subject to the random drug testing policy and periodic driver's license verifications.
  • Must possess a home telephone for emergencies and standby callouts


  1. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Thorough knowledge of fleet management principles and vehicle lifecycle management.
  • Thorough knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine repair, hydraulics, electrical systems, computerized diagnostics, brakes, steering, suspension, and fuel systems.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and fleet asset management software.
  • Knowledge of fleet budgeting, replacement planning, purchasing, and inventory control.
  • Skill in the use of diagnostic equipment, hand tools, welding equipment, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to diagnose complex mechanical problems and make sound decisions independently.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate employees.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, vendors, contractors, and the public.
  • Ability to work safely in shop and field environments under varying weather conditions.


  1. 4. Working Conditions: Employee(s) in this position perform in generally comfortable conditions involving intermittent sitting, standing, walking, stooping, and reaching. Tasks require physical activities working out of doors with exposure to various types of weather conditions, including potential weather extremes. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must consistently bend, lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Talking, hearing and seeing required in the normal course of performing the job. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity are required to perform essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking and creative problem solving. Periodic local travel required in course of performing portions of job functions. Considerable exposure to stress as a result of human behavior, frequent deadlines, and the general demands of the position.
