Full Job Description
The Role

As the Fleet Manager, you are the operational owner of Bronte Construction's truck and equipment fleet and the day-to-day leader of the yard. Based on-site at the Bronte Construction Yard, you'll manage the mechanics, the yard staff, and the logistics of moving trucks and equipment to active job sites - safely, on time, and within budget.

This role is the bridge between the field and the shop. You'll own fleet readiness, execution of the preventive maintenance program, MTO/CVOR compliance, oversight of electronic monitoring, and the supervision and development of our trades and yard team. You'll work closely with Project Managers, Site Supervisors, the Procurement Manager, and HSE & Fleet Admin to ensure every crew has the right asset, in the right condition, at the right time.

This is a Management-tier position per the Bronte Career Ladder and reports to the Construction Manager.

Responsibilities
  • Daily dispatching of trucks, trailers, and equipment to projects based on schedule, priority, and operator certifications
  • Conducting daily yard walks - visual inspection of equipment, trucks, fuel levels, security, housekeeping, and PPE compliance
  • Coordinating equipment moves between job sites, including permits, escorts, and load securement
  • Supervising mechanics - assigning work orders, reviewing priorities, troubleshooting blockers, and signing off on completed repairs
  • Reviewing SiteDocs Monthly Vehicle Audit submissions and defect close-outs; escalating non-compliance
  • Scheduling preventive maintenance for trucks, trailers, attachments, and heavy equipment per OEM intervals, in coordination with HSE & Fleet Admin
  • Leading weekly coordination meetings with Project Managers and Site Supervisors to review upcoming equipment and trucking needs and the 2-week look-ahead
  • Reviewing GPS/telematics exception reports
  • Reviewing fuel card statements and reconciling against telematics
  • Conducting toolbox talks and safety meetings with mechanics and yard staff
  • Managing CVOR compliance, reviewing driver abstracts on a rotating schedule, and leading corrective action planning
  • Reporting on fleet utilization, downtime, repair cost trends, and rent-vs-own analysis to the Construction Manager
  • Providing input to the annual fleet capital plan
  • Managing equipment and tool rentals (rent vs. buy decisions)

A Day in the Life

Your day starts early at the yard. You walk the lot before the crews roll out - eyes on equipment condition, fuel, security, and housekeeping. By 7:00 a.m., dispatch is confirmed, and every site knows what's coming. Mid-morning, you're in the shop reviewing work orders with the mechanics, troubleshooting a hydraulic issue on a loader, and rescheduling a PM that conflicts with tomorrow's pour. After lunch, you're on a call with a Project Manager negotiating equipment priorities for next week, then closing out a SiteDocs defect, then checking the telematics dashboard for any drivers who need a coaching conversation. Before you leave, you've signed off on the day's repairs and confirmed tomorrow's dispatch is locked in.

Requirements

5+ years of direct supervision of mechanics, drivers, or yard personnel in a construction, civil, trucking, or heavy-equipment environment, including hiring, coaching, disciplining, and conducting performance reviews

5+ years operating or managing a mixed fleet - pickups, dump trucks, float/lowbed combinations, and heavy equipment (excavators, loaders, skid steers, compaction) - with working knowledge of preventive maintenance programs, fault diagnostics, and shop scheduling

3+ years of dispatching or logistics coordination across multiple active job sites, including permits, load securement, oversize/overweight moves, and tight scheduling

3+ years using telematics/GPS fleet management platforms (e.g., Geotab, Samsara, or equivalent), reviewing exception reports, and using data to drive operator behaviour change

2+ years of CVOR management and Ministry of Transportation compliance (Hours of Service, daily inspections, audits) and working with insurers on fleet claims

1+ years of departmental or fleet budget ownership (capital and operating), including rent vs. buy analysis and supplier negotiation

  • Valid Ontario Class G driver's licence with a clean abstract (Class A/Z is a strong asset)
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Working at Heights, WHMIS 2015, OHSA Awareness (Worker & Supervisor), and Standard First Aid/CPR-C

Considered Strong Assets
  • Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (310T) or Truck & Coach (310T) certification
  • Post-secondary credential in Fleet/Logistics, Heavy Equipment Technician program, Supply Chain, or Construction Management
  • CRSP/CHSC, CITT, or P.Log designation
  • Class A/Z driver's licence
  • Hands-on willingness to assist in the shop when the situation calls for it

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary range: $95,000 - $115,000 per year, commensurate with experience
  • Group benefits (health, dental, vision)
  • Deferred Profit Sharing Plan (DPSP) with employer matching
  • Performance Bonus Program eligibility
  • Annual training and career development programs
