Position Type: Fixed-Term (12 months, full-time temporary role)

Department: Clinic Solutions

Work Location: 3755 Riverside Dr, Ottawa, ON K1V

Work Hours: Mon-Fri, Standard Business Hours

Work Arrangement: on-site

Travel Required: No

The Opportunity:

In keeping with the Mission Statement of Ottawa Ophthalmology and in conjunction with an ophthalmologist, the orthoptist is responsible for examining, aiding in the diagnosis, and treatment of visual system dysfunction involving vision, eye movement, eye alignment, and binocularity. The orthoptist assigned to this position is required to function independently and as a member of the Ophthalmology Team to provide an integrated approach to patient focused and evidence-based care. This position involves responsibilities at the Ottawa Ophthalmology location and may involve work at the University of Ottawa Eye Institute.

A Day in the Life (What you will do here):

  • Deal compassionately with patients diagnosed with ophthalmologic conditions and their families.
  • Provide workup of quantitative visual function
  • Carry out full orthoptic assessments, specifically qualification and quantification of ocular misalignment (strabismus) and related sensory anomalies
  • Determine the cause of patients' presenting subjective symptoms and objective signs relating to abnormal binocular visual function and ocular motility.
  • Implement and monitor non-surgical treatment of binocular vision, ocular motility and related disorders of vision
  • Provide recommendations for the enhancements and/or restoration of patient's binocular vision, ocular motility and related disorders of vision.
  • Consult with the referring ophthalmologist regarding findings and treatment.
  • Conduct follow-up appointments for treatments independently.
  • Identify real and potential problems and respond to emergencies by intervening directly or referring to other health care professionals.
  • Provide teaching to patients and other health care professionals.
  • Participate in all clinic activities
  • Participate in research
  • Provide information to patients in clinic setting in clinic setting and over the telephone
  • Get involved in patient advocacy and education initiatives in the workplace
  • Support, mentor and teach members of the health care team, including students.
  • Commit to continuous learning to develop expertise in the specialty.
  • The successful candidate will be a calm but motivated individual with demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by the manager


What you need to ensure you are set up for success:

Required:

  • Current registration with the Canadian Orthoptic Council or American Orthoptic Society
  • Membership with the Canadian Orthoptic Society
  • Certification in Ophthalmic Technology
  • Excellent interpersonal and teaching skills
  • Strong commitment to patient-centered care and professional development


Preferred:

  • Bilingualism (English and French)
  • Minimum two (2) years of Orthoptic experience

  • The anticipated hourly rate, hiring range for this role is $40 to $50 hourly. The final base salary will be determined based on relevant experience, skills, and internal equity.
