The Role

The Fire Captain is responsible for protecting life and property as Incident Commander for their assigned firefighting watch. The incumbent provides leadership and guidance to the Town of High River personnel assigned to their watch with personnel issues and in the provision of fire suppression, emergency medical services, training, fire prevention, inspection and investigative activities. They ensure all documentation and Legislative requirements are met in a timely fashion. The Fire Captain also supports the functions of High River Fire Department Administration.

Duties:

• Respond to fires, motor vehicle collisions and other emergency incidents as required. Manage the emergency response and perform a variety of rescue related duties to protect the public and lessen severity of injuries.
• Lead daily station routine and provide leadership, guidance, mentoring and ensure inclusion of, junior members including Reserve fire fighters and Volunteers.
• Responsible for the coordination of fire station routines regarding: tool, apparatus, and equipment maintenance; general maintenance of the fire station; daily training and drills; station training plans and the daily routine of the station and members.
• Ensure accurate and timely completion of station administrative tasks and reports including: scheduling Reserve firefighters; coordinating and collecting time sheets; ordering office supplies and sundries and preparing all reports and projects as directed by Deputy Chief Or Fire Chief.
• Conduct fire inspections and pre-incident planning including hydrant mapping and area familiarization.
• Community assignments as directed by HRFD leadership
• Represent High River Fire Department on Corporate and departmental committees as assigned.
• Adhere to Health and Safety Legislation and Town of High River safe work policies and procedures at all times ensuring the protection and safety of self, co-workers, the public and the environment.
• When assigned, perform complete fire investigations to determine origin, cause, and circumstances of a fire in conformance with the provincial Safety Codes Act.
• Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to life long learning in the areas of fire suppression, equipment, tools, apparatus, procedures and personal development.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Participate actively in platoon and individual training, and conduct training within level of competency for other firefighters.

• Deliver public safety and community education programs.

• Assist the Fire Chief and the Deputy Fire Chief with daily operations and implementing approved initiatives.

• Operate, maintain, housekeep, clean, and inspect vehicles, equipment, tools, facilities, and specialized fire fighting apparatus.
• Coordinate and lead fire-fighting efforts of both casual and volunteer firefighters in the absence of senior officers.
• Attend meetings and practices as required.
• Will be involved in public relations, supply inventory management, fleet maintenance, policy development and emergency preparedness planning.
• Assist with Emergency Management and the Town's Health and Safety program.
• Perform all other related duties as assigned.
• Participate in the High River Fire Department shift rotation.

Qualifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent
• 5 years progressively responsible experience within a recognized fire service
• NFPA 1001 Level 2
• Pump Operators course
• Current Class 3Q vehicle operator's permit
• EMR Minimum and HCP CPR
• Current Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification (asset)
• NFPA 1041 Level 1 Instructor
• NFPA 1021 Level 1 Officer Training
• NFPA 1002 Driver/Pump/Aerial
• Basic Fire Safety Codes Officer (asset)
• Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook
• Knowledge of local, provincial, and national codes, bylaws and laws relating to fire prevention and principles administration
• Demonstrated leadership skills, team building, problem solving and good communication, coaching and mentoring abilities
• Clean Criminal Record
• Clean Vulnerable Sector Record Check
• Valid Alberta class 3 and 4
• Possess the physical agility and stamina sufficient to perform all functions of this position in extremely adverse conditions
• Possess the ability to lift heavy equipment /loads as needed (May be expected to carry equipment weighing 20 to 40 lbs up stairs while wearing protective gear weighing at least 50lbs or to carry or rescue-drag individuals weighing over 200lbs)
• Possess adequate vision, hearing, mobility and dexterity to perform routine and non-routine firefighting tasks
• Able to maintain self discipline and professionalism at all times
• Able to react quickly and remain calm in stressful situations
• Satisfactory completion of a medical examination
• Available to work assigned shifts seven days a week in an assigned fire station
• Maintain current registrations/certifications through the applicable professional associations with respect to firefighter and emergency medical competencies and engage in continuous education for timely re-certifications. NOTE: Firefighters are individually responsible for timely and successfully completing required reclassifications, skill maintenance tests and examinations
