This individual serves as the senior financial executive of the company overseeing all financial operations, providing strategic analysis, ensuring compliance and risk management, and providing oversight of payroll, human resources, and office administration for a growing general contracting business. This role works closely with Leadership and Operations to maintain financial health, optimize processes, and support informed decision-making, and supervises the accounting and administrative support staff, including the payroll / benefits coordinator. Strong construction accounting experience is essential. This role reports directly to the President.

Position Description

FCI Construction structures all roles as having (3) CORE FUNCTIONS that each have (3-4) SUPPORT FUNCTIONS . Our job postings and reviews will evaluate candidates (and employees) according to these functions.

MANAGE: Oversee the financial operations of the Company, including general ledger, cash management, accounts payable and accounts receivable. Supervise the accounting and administrative support staff, maintain open communication with employees, and collaborate with operations on financial activities.

  • CASH MANAGEMENT : Monitor cash flow and forecast cash requirements to maintain a positive cash position. Communicate cash status to the operations team for appropriate release of payments on a weekly basis.


  • ACCOUNTS PAYABLE : Oversee the payables process, ensure accurate data entry, timely review, and proper payment processing through the accounting software and online banking system. Collaborate with operations team for releasing weekly payments to subcontractors, vendors and suppliers through weekly payables reports.


  • ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE : Monitor and maintain aging of Company receivables. Ensure lien waiver compliance during submission and assist operations with waiver completion as needed. Collaborate with operations team for aging receivables for timely collections of payment.


  • RELATIONSHIPS : Maintain a servant-leadership approach with all stakeholders (owners, vendors, subcontractors, and employees). Build and sustain positive relationships with external vendors, contractors, and owners to support smooth financial operations.


  • TEAM LEADERSHIP : Supervise, train, and develop the accounting and administrative support staff. Set priorities, review work for accuracy, and maintain documented procedures and cross-training so critical functions stay covered during absences.


ANALYZE: Prepare and interpret financial statements and performance reports to identify trends, efficiencies, and insights into profitability. The individual will provide actionable recommendations to leadership based on data-driven analysis.

  • MONTH / YEAR END REPORTING: Ensure timely month-end close by coordinating with operations and preconstruction teams for updated projections and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules. Review WIP reports and job cost data for accuracy and completeness.


  • BUDGETING: Develop annual budgets for company overhead, field operations, and shop expenses. Conduct monthly variance analysis of budget vs. actual performance to identify risks and opportunities. Collaborate with operations to plan capital expenditures for large equipment and infrastructure needs.
  • PROCESS IMPROVEMENT - Optimize accounting workflows and leverage technology for efficiency (e.g., automation of AP/AR processes). Lead ongoing evaluation of accounting, payroll, reporting, and administrative processes. Identify opportunities to automate workflows, improve internal controls, reduce manual effort, and enhance financial visibility for operations and leadership.


  • KPI FORECASTING : Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for financial health and operational efficiency. Track and report on metrics such as gross margin, overhead absorption, and job profitability. Prepare cash flow forecasts and financial projections to support strategic planning. Identify potential shortfalls or surpluses and recommend corrective actions.


ADMINISTER: Provide oversight and accountability for the payroll, human resources, and administrative functions performed by the payroll / benefits coordinator. Employee benefits are administered by an outside carrier, with this role serving as the Company's point of contact. Ensure these functions are executed accurately, confidentially, and on schedule, and serve as the review and escalation point for matters requiring leadership judgment.

  • PAYROLL OVERSIGHT - Oversee the payroll / benefits coordinator in processing payroll for field and office staff. Review payroll registers, timecard approvals, and job and cost-code allocation prior to release, including prevailing wage and certified payroll reporting where applicable. Confirm payroll tax deposits and filings are made on time, verify year-end W-2 accuracy, and reconcile payroll to the general ledger and to the labor burden rates used in job costing.


  • BENEFITS - Serve as the Company's point of contact for the outside benefits carrier. Review annual renewal costs and plan changes with leadership before they are communicated to employees and ensure monthly carrier invoices reconcile to payroll deductions in the general ledger. Coordinate the annual workers' compensation audit.


  • HUMAN RESOURCES OVERSIGHT - Ensure personnel records, onboarding, and offboarding are maintained accurately and confidentially. Monitor compliance with employment regulations (FLSA, FMLA, ACA reporting, I-9 verification), advise leadership on employment matters, and engage outside counsel or an HR advisor when appropriate.


  • OFFICE ADMINISTRATION - Oversee general office operations, administrative vendor accounts, and business insurance renewals. Ensure organized, secure recordkeeping for financial and personnel files consistent with retention requirements.


CONTROL: Ensure compliance, accuracy, and risk management across all financial activities. Safeguard company assets through strong internal controls and adherence to industry standards.

  • COMPLIANCE - Implement and monitor internal controls for all financial transactions to prevent errors and fraud. Maintain proper documentation for audits and regulatory compliance. Ensure adherence to GAAP, company policies, and contractual obligations. Oversee insurance requirements and bonding processes.


  • RISK MANAGEMENT - Monitor credit card usage, expense reporting, and subcontractor compliance to mitigate financial risk. Monitor ACH, positive pay process and online banking transactions to mitigate financial risk. Maintain positive banking relationships and ensure compliance with loan covenants.


  • SYSTEM INTEGRITY - Oversee accuracy of the general ledger and reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts. Ensure financial data integrity within the accounting system.


  • AUDIT REPORTING - Support internal and external audits by providing accurate documentation and timely responses. Prepare compliance reports for leadership and external stakeholders as needed.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. A CPA is welcome, but not a requirement.
  • Minimum 7+ years of progressive financial management experience, preferably in construction.
  • Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, and construction billing practices.
  • Proficiency with construction accounting systems, preferably viewpoint and vista. Advanced Excel skills including PivotTables, Power Query, and financial modeling. Experience implementing workflow automation and reporting tools.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of payroll and human resources administration sufficient to direct and review the work of others, including multi-state or certified payroll where applicable.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising, training, and developing accounting or administrative staff.
  • Sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential compensation, benefits, and personnel information.
