JOB PURPOSE

The Finance Director serves as the organization's chief financial officer, providing strategic leadership and oversight of all financial operations and long-term fiscal planning. This role is responsible for ensuring the financial health and sustainability of the organization through sound financial management, forward-looking analysis, and alignment of financial strategies with the organization's mission and goals.

The Finance Director oversees all financial operations and reporting for the organization, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies. This position establishes and maintains robust internal controls, safeguards organizational assets, and ensures transparency and accountability in all financial practices.

In addition to operational oversight, the Finance Director functions as a key member of the executive leadership team, advising the Executive Director and Board of Directors on financial strategy, risk management, budgeting, forecasting, and investment decisions. The role provides leadership and direction for the General Accounting, Financial Reporting, and Financial Services functions, while driving continuous improvement in financial systems, processes, and performance.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Operations Management:
  • Supervise and direct daily accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, etc.
  • Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard the organization's assets.
  • Monitor cash flow, ensuring sufficient liquidity to meet operational needs.

Financial Reporting:
  • Prepare and review accurate and timely financial reports, including monthly, quarterly, and annual statements.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to provide financial insights and data to support strategic decision-making.

Budgeting and Forecasting:
  • Lead the annual budgeting process, working closely with department heads to develop and manage budgets aligned with the organization's goals.
  • Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis and forecasts.

Audit and Compliance:
  • Coordinate external audits and ensure timely preparation of audit schedules and responses to auditor inquiries.
  • Oversee compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including nonprofit-specific financial requirements.
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation and filing of tax returns and other regulatory filings, such as Form 990.

Strategic Financial Planning:
  • Advise leadership on financial strategy and resource allocation to achieve organizational goals.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for process improvement, cost savings, and efficiency gains.
  • Support fundraising efforts by ensuring accurate reporting of donor contributions and grant funds.
  • All other duties assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business management or related field.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment background check and any subsequent background check after employment.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and internal control frameworks.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and financial systems; experience with nonprofit-specific software is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical and attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proven experience in a leadership role, preferably in a Accounting.
  • Strong financial acumen and budget management experience.
  • Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic planning and execution abilities.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing teams.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance and industry best practices.
  • Successfully complete employment-related training as directed.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer.
  • Frequent use of standard office equipment, including computers, telephones, and printers.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 20 pounds (e.g., files, office supplies).
  • Ability to move around the office and attend meetings or events in various locations.
